OpenAI adds ChatGPT to Word and opens its Office add-in to free users

OpenAI launched ChatGPT inside Microsoft Word on September 17th, making the add-in available across every ChatGPT plan including Free, subject to usage limits, and extending the same Microsoft add-in to PowerPoint and Excel. OpenAI said Business and Enterprise customers get a free two-week preview of GPT-5.6 Sol in Word starting September 17th, and the company plans to enable ChatGPT for Word by default on October 1st, with workspace and Microsoft 365 administrators able to disable or restrict access. The add-in installs through Microsoft Marketplace and puts OpenAI's ChatGPT-branded assistant directly inside the Word users Microsoft already serves with Microsoft 365 Copilot.

Why it matters #

OpenAI is turning ChatGPT from a destination into an Office-native work layer, giving it direct distribution inside Microsoft's most valuable productivity software.

OpenAI launched ChatGPT inside Microsoft Word on September 17th, giving users a sidebar that can draft, edit, proofread and reformat text without moving content into a separate chatbot window.

https://x.com/ChatGPT/status/2100661995762798916/video/1 OpenAI said in a post on X that the Word integration is available across every ChatGPT plan, including Free, subject to usage limits. The same Microsoft add-in also works in PowerPoint and Excel, extending OpenAI's own interface across the three Office applications where much of corporate knowledge work ends up.

Readers who already follow RuntimeWire knew this was coming: our previous coverage detailed the hidden task system OpenAI had built for ChatGPT inside Excel and PowerPoint files. Adding Word extends that earlier work across the core Office suite.

Inside Word, ChatGPT can turn notes and source material into a first draft, rewrite selected passages, reorganize sections and identify inconsistent language or formatting. The ChatGPT for Word documentation says users can install the add-in through Microsoft Marketplace, open it from the Word ribbon and sign in with an existing ChatGPT account.

That puts OpenAI directly inside a product where Microsoft already sells its own Copilot assistant. The overlap is unusually direct: OpenAI supplies models to Microsoft 365 Copilot, while the new add-in gives OpenAI a separate, ChatGPT-branded route to the same Word users.

OpenAI wants the work to stay inside the document

The product design targets a persistent weakness in browser-based writing assistants. Moving text between Word and a chat window strips away document structure, creates version-control problems and adds manual work whenever a user accepts only part of a suggested rewrite.

ChatGPT for Word instead reads the open document and can operate on selected text. Users can ask it to draft an executive summary, shorten a section for a particular audience, adjust headings and numbering, or flag inconsistent terminology. OpenAI says the add-in can also work with supported services such as Outlook, SharePoint, Google Workspace and Dropbox when a user's plan, permissions and administrator settings allow those connections.

The integration still has boundaries. OpenAI's documentation warns that complex formatting, charts and tables may require manual correction. ChatGPT can work with the document currently open in Word, but it cannot independently inspect unrelated local files. Conversations created through the add-in also remain separate from a user's main ChatGPT history, and ChatGPT memory does not carry over.

OpenAI plans to enable ChatGPT for Word by default beginning October 1st, according to its help center. Workspace administrators can disable the feature through OpenAI's admin console, while Microsoft 365 administrators retain control over whether employees can install or access the add-in.

Two weeks of Sol without the meter running

OpenAI is using the launch to promote its higher-end model inside Office. Business and Enterprise customers will receive a free preview of GPT-5.6 Sol in Word from September 17th through September 30th, with preview activity excluded from their normal usage limits, according to OpenAI's announcement.

The temporary offer matters because Office integrations can consume substantial amounts of context. A long report, presentation or spreadsheet requires the model to process the source file, the user's instructions and the generated revisions. OpenAI's pricing documentation says Word usage depends on the selected model, document size and task, and draws from shared allowances used by Codex and other premium features on applicable plans.

Free access therefore does not mean unrestricted use. OpenAI says each plan's limits apply, while paid and managed workspaces may draw from shared agentic usage or credit pools. For Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts, OpenAI says inputs and outputs are not used to train its models by default.

OpenAI had already established separate native products for PowerPoint and Excel. Adding Word completes the core Office trio and gives OpenAI a distribution channel that does not depend on users choosing ChatGPT over Microsoft 365 during procurement. A company can standardize on Microsoft Office and still place OpenAI's interface directly beside the document.

That arrangement also sharpens the question of who owns the user relationship. Microsoft can offer Copilot as the integrated assistant bundled around its productivity suite. OpenAI can now reach the same worker with the ChatGPT account, models and usage system that person already uses elsewhere. The underlying model partnership remains intact. The interface competition has moved into the document.
