OpenAI has officially embedded ChatGPT into Microsoft Word through a new add-in that launched on September 17, 2026. The tool lets users draft, revise, proofread, summarize, and format documents from an interactive sidebar, all without ever leaving the Word interface.

The ChatGPT add-in lives as a sidebar inside Microsoft Word, installable through the Microsoft Marketplace. Once activated, it handles a range of document tasks: converting rough notes into structured drafts, tightening arguments, applying consistent formatting, and summarizing lengthy content.
The add-in is available to all ChatGPT users globally, from free-tier accounts to enterprise plans. Usage limits still apply based on whatever plan you’re on. But the barrier to entry is notably low compared to Microsoft’s own Copilot product, which typically requires a separate license.
