OpenAI Found Spying Device At Office; Tracks Accused Via AI Before Calling FBI For Arrest

OpenAI said it discovered a sophisticated recording device hidden in a San Francisco office, used its own AI models to trace the device to a specific employee, and referred the matter to the FBI, which arrested the employee on October 13, 2026. OpenAI said it has no indications the individual inappropriately accessed or exfiltrated model weights, source code, or customer data, and the employee has been terminated. FBI Director Kash Patel said the man allegedly concealed the device in an executive conference room to secretly capture sensitive communications about the company's superintelligence technology; per an OpenAI complaint cited by Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin, the device was installed on or about Sept. 28, found Sept. 30 in a USB port on the back of a television, had been concealed in toilet paper, and its contents were encrypted.

OpenAI says it found a sophisticated recording device hidden inside one of its offices. Per the company’s update, an employee has since been arrested in connection with it. The Sam Altman-led company claimed that it used its own advanced AI models to analyze the device and work out where it came from. The AI analysis pointed to a specific employee, who OpenAI says planted the device a few days earlier. OpenAI referred the matter to the FBI, and agents and prosecutors moved quickly to make the arrest. The employee has been terminated.

We discovered a sophisticated recording device that was hidden inside one of our offices. We used our models to understand the device and where it had come from, identifying that a specific employee had planted it a few days earlier. We referred the matter to the FBI, and we’re grateful to the agents and prosecutors who moved quickly to make an arrest. The FBI’s investigation is ongoing, and we will continue to support their work.

FBI Director Kash Patel Statement #

Meanwhile, FBI Director Kash Patel said a man was arrested who allegedly concealed the recording device inside his employer’s executive conference room. According to Patel, the purpose of the task was to secretly capture sensitive communications about the company’s superintelligence technology. Patel quipped, sharing a tweet by a Fox News correspondent, Bill Melugin, who claimed that the accused is a Saudi national and the only staff from the region. Per Melugin, the man was caught by OpenAI CCTV. He also cited OpenAI’s complaint as the following:

“Alfozan had been employed as an engineer by the company identified as “Company 1” since July 2025.
