ChatGPT is expanding its image-generation capabilities with a new feature that lets users create animated GIFs directly on the platform. Powered by OpenAI's Images 2.6 model, the tool can turn an uploaded photo into an animation based on a text description, offering an alternative to sharing still pictures. Users can also fine-tune the result by changing playback speed or modifying individual frames. The update is designed to make image creation quicker while giving users more flexibility to customise and share their animations.

You no longer need to search for a separate GIF-making tool if you want to turn a photo into a short animation. ChatGPT can do it using a simple text instruction. Upload a picture of yourself, your pet or any other subject, explain how you want it to move, and the AI will generate the animation. Don't have a photo to use? You can also describe a scene in a prompt and ask ChatGPT to create a GIF from scratch. OpenAI's example is a cartoon-style animation of someone peeking over a pile of Diwali gift boxes.

You Can Change How Your GIF Looks And Plays #
The first result doesn't have to be the final one. ChatGPT now lets users speed up or slow down their GIFs, with playback options from 0.5x to 2x. You can also go back and make changes to specific frames, rather than regenerating the entire animation. Need to remove something from the picture or change the size of an object? The existing editing tools can help with that, too.
Images 2.6 Is Not Just About GIFs #
OpenAI has added a few other improvements alongside animation support. Images 2.6 is designed to generate pictures faster and lets users save reference images of people, pets and characters. These saved references can be reused in later creations, so you don't have to upload the same photo every time you want the AI to feature a familiar face or character. The growing interest in AI image tools is reflected in OpenAI's usage figures: users now generate more than 4 billion images every week across ChatGPT and its API, up from over 3 billion eight weeks earlier.
ChatGPT GIF Feature Available In India, Including Free Users #
You don't need a paid ChatGPT subscription to try the new image tools. Images 2.6 is available to free and paid users on the web, desktop and mobile apps, including in India. Developers can access the technology through two API models: Flare, which focuses on generating lower-quality images quickly and can produce one in as little as six seconds, and Sunburst, which is meant for more detailed results and consistent edits. OpenAI claims both offer image generation speeds up to 50% faster.
