Oil-importing countries still keep a small domestic refinery running. It’s not price-competitive with imports. Nobody expects it to replace the import relationship.
It exists for one reason. If the relationship sours, or the price spikes, or a shipping lane closes, there’s a fallback. Not excellent. Entirely yours.
Microsoft’s in-house AI group just shipped two models. MAI-Image-2.5-Pro, an image generator. MAI-Voice-2-Flash, a fast, cheap voice engine.
Neither needed to exist. Microsoft already has deep access to some of the best image and voice models around. Through a partner it owns a stake in.
Building a competitor to a company you’re invested in looks strange from outside. It’s not strange. It’s deliberate. The naming gives away the strategy, and the architecture underneath gives away the engineering priorities. Both are worth taking apart properly.

The Microsoft-OpenAI relationship is not a simple vendor contract. Microsoft’s investment, reported across multiple funding rounds, ties Azure’s infrastructure revenue directly to…
