Since first uttering the term “Googlebook,” Google hasn’t made a great case for its laptops beyond adding AI to the mouse cursor. But the first leaks of what appears to be a new round of Android-based laptops are actually starting to get us—if not overtly excited—at least skeptically interested in whether Googlebooks can become the capable notebooks Chromebooks never could.
The first supposed Googlebook leaks from Lenovo and Asus have slithered their way into the dark corners of the internet. On Tuesday, 9to5Google presented images of a supposed Asus “Chromebook CX9406.” The images first appeared in a since-deleted listing on iF Design’s website. While the product is described as a Chromebook, it’s supposedly using Aluminum OS, the codename for the operating system powering Google’s next slate of laptops.
The Lenovo model is even more interesting. Digital Citizen shared more leaked images of the Lenovo Googlebook 15 with its sleek white chassis. Both the Lenovo and Asus Googlebook contain a dedicated “G” key, similar to modern Chromebook Plus models. It’s likely to work as a dedicated Gemini AI button to bring up a chatbot prompt or other AI features such as Circle to Search. These laptops also sport a key that seems to contain the same “Quick Launch” glyph in the space usually occupied by the Caps Lock key.
The port selection on each laptop isn’t spectacular, though the build quality is worth noting. iF Design’s listing for the Asus Googlebook, according to 9to5Google, noted that the laptop used an “Ultra-Ceramic Light Alloy” material for its chassis, likely the company’s anodized “Ceraluminum” finish used on devices like the recent Zenbook A16. It supposedly weighs less than 2.2 pounds.
Neither leak offers us any idea what’s happening under the hood. However, X leaker Longhorn (first spotted by Notebookcheck) suggested that the supposed chip inside upcoming Googlebooks is a Qualcomm “Calypso” model. The leak indicated that Calypso is a 12-core Snapdragon X2 processor, perhaps scaled down and designed for these lower-end laptops. Previous high-end Chromebooks, like the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 and Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 514, relied on an octa-core MediaTek Kompanio Ultra 910 chip. Qualcomm’s new chip could be dedicated to making Googlebooks run as well as a typical PC.

So we don’t have a complete picture of how powerful these Googlebooks will be. Still, there’s reason to be curious. Google has suggested that Aluminum OS was designed to meld Android features and apps into the old ChromeOS. So far, we’ve gotten no indication of what apps might be included. In the Lenovo leak, you can spy some of the apps present on the desktop. One of those images shows the Adobe Premiere Pro logo. That app isn’t available natively on either ChromeOS or Android, so its inclusion here may suggest that Googlebooks will receive better app support than Chromebooks ever have.
These disparate leaks are the barest inkling of what’s coming down the pike, but it’s enough to have us intrigued. Within the next few months, we may be able to determine if these are truly next-gen laptops or merely another “Chromebook Pro.”
