- OpenAI is restoring five-hour usage limits on ChatGPT Work and Codex for Plus subscribers.
- The limits will allow OpenAI to manage its resources and continue offering generous weekly usage.
- The five-hour limits are currently not applicable to ChatGPT Pro users.
If you’ve been experimenting with ChatGPT Work and Codex and exploring the possibilities they unlock, you might need to slow down a bit. While OpenAI had removed the five-hour limits on ChatGPT Work and Codex following the release of GPT-5.6, the company is now bringing those limits back. In a post on X, Thibault Sottiaux, OpenAI’s head of Codex and ChatGPT, announced that users with a ChatGPT Plus subscription will once again have five-hour limits across ChatGPT Work and Codex starting August 25.
thsottiaux / X According to Sottiaux, reinstating the limit will allow OpenAI to manage its computing resources more effectively while still offering “generous” weekly limits. The weekly quota will now be available to ChatGPT Plus users in five-hour usage windows, after which they will have to wait for their limit to reset before using the rest of their allowance.
Sottiaux also added that those on the “Plus” plan are relatively casual users and new users who often accidentally exceed their weekly limit and are then confused. Apparently, OpenAI thinks five-hour limits will help these “casual” and “new” users better manage their weekly usage.
The reinstated five-hour limits are currently only applicable to users with a ChatGPT Plus subscription. Those subscribed to the $200 or $100 ChatGPT Pro plans will not face this limitation and will only have weekly limits on their accounts. However, Sottiaux’s X post makes it clear that five-hour limits could be introduced for Pro accounts in a couple of months.
