A Shanghai firm's DUV machine milestone spooked markets, but analysts say the technology gap between China and ASML remains wide
Markets had a brief panic. Roughly €55 billion in market value evaporated from ASML after reports surfaced that a state-linked Shanghai firm had begun mass-producing domestic immersion Deep Ultraviolet lithography machines. ASML shares dropped over 5% in late July 2026.
What actually happened #
The Shanghai entity in question reportedly achieved mass production of DUV lithography machines, which are a category of chip-making tools that ASML also produces but considers something of a legacy product compared to its flagship Extreme Ultraviolet systems. DUV machines make older, less advanced chips. EUV machines make the cutting-edge stuff that powers modern AI processors.
The domestic machines are reportedly being prepared for delivery to major Chinese chipmakers including SMIC, Hua Hong Semiconductor, and ChangXin Memory Technologies by 2026. But analysts who have looked at the specifications argue that the rival technology does not match what ASML actually ships.
The export restriction angle everyone keeps missing #
ASML is already restricted from selling its EUV systems to China, per US and Dutch export controls. Further restrictions on older DUV tools have been proposed as well.
China accounted for 33% of ASML’s revenue in 2025. That number is expected to fall to around 20% in 2026, not because Chinese manufacturers suddenly stopped wanting the machines, but because export restrictions are systematically narrowing what ASML is legally permitted to sell into that market.
China is developing domestic DUV capability to replace equipment it was increasingly going to be blocked from buying anyway. The 13-percentage-point revenue decline from China was baked into forward projections before the Shanghai news broke.
Why ASML’s core position remains intact #
No other company on earth makes EUV lithography machines at commercial scale. TSMC, Samsung, and Intel are ASML customers for their most advanced nodes, and none of them have a credible alternative supplier waiting in the wings.
China’s domestic lithography ambitions are focused on achieving self-sufficiency at older process nodes. The chips required for large language models and AI training clusters are manufactured on processes that require EUV.
For investors watching ASML, the variables that actually matter are the pace of EUV adoption at leading-edge fabs, the trajectory of AI capital spending, and whether export restrictions expand further in ways that accelerate China’s DUV revenue decline faster than projected.
