Mark Zuckerberg and Ari Emanuel are using the Wall Street Journal’s op-ed pages to sell corporate consolidation as populist liberation, and the business press is transcribing the pitch without checking the receipts.
When billionaires warn against "concentrating power," they usually mean consolidating it under their own roofs. Zuckerberg is rebranding his AI strategy as a defense of the little guy to distract from his history of centralized censorship and China lobbying, while Emanuel is waving away a $110 billion media monopoly by claiming it competes with video games.
Entrepreneur reported that Zuckerberg used a WSJ op-ed to argue that "superintelligence" shouldn't belong to a few giant tech companies. "The notion that AI is so dangerous that the only safe path is an extreme concentration of power seems dangerous," Zuckerberg wrote. He claimed widely distributed AI will create a "more entrepreneurial" economy built around small businesses rather than large companies. Entrepreneur framed this straight, calling Meta a "leading advocate for open-source AI," while noting Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei wants more control over open models.
But the press is laundering his motives. Zuckerberg claims he wants to stop centralized power, but his track record shows he wants centralized control—he just wants to be the one centralizing it. This is a calculated PR pivot to deflect from his China lobbying and his platform's history of throttling speech at the behest of government agencies. Decentralization for AI, but top-down censorship for your newsfeed.
The same corporate sleight of hand is playing out in Hollywood. Deadline covered another WSJ op-ed where Ari Emanuel backs Paramount's $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, blasting the antitrust lawsuit from 12 state attorneys general as "trash." Emanuel insists the merger "could save Hollywood" and argues that studio releases compete with YouTube, Call of Duty, and MrBeast.
Deadline actually did the follow-the-money homework the WSJ skipped. Emanuel's TKO Group (UFC) snagged a $7.7 billion rights deal from Paramount's new ownership. The WSJ tagline merely said he "does business with movie studios," burying his massive financial stake in the deal. Emanuel claims the AGs are "pretending" Amazon MGM and Netflix don't exist, but he's pretending his own $7.7 billion payout doesn't color his antitrust analysis.
Both moguls are using the same playbook. One claims decentralization while building a censorship empire; the other claims competition while pocketing billions from a monopoly merger. The business press just transcribes the press release.
If the press won't ask who actually profits when billionaires preach the virtues of decentralization, the public will just keep getting sold monopolies dressed up as freedom.
