In the age of AI, some people may wonder why developers still spend time preparing for a Java certification when AI can generate code, explain concepts, and identify errors within seconds.

I want to continue learning about databases, cloud technologies, system design, testing, AI, and communication. At the same time, I want Java to be the area where I build stronger depth. I want to understand more than how to write code that works. I want to understand why it works, how Java behaves in different situations, and how small changes can affect the result.
Preparing for OCP Java 21 gives me a structured way to strengthen that knowledge. Passing the exam would be exciting, but the knowledge, discipline, and confidence I develop while preparing may be even more valuable than the final result.
As I started preparing, I asked a friend for advice. He has experience studying for difficult maritime certification exams required for working on ships. Although our certifications are in different fields, both require technical knowledge, consistency, and a clear study plan.
His advice was practical, so I decided to apply it to my OCP Java 21 preparation and share it with others who may also be preparing for a challenging certification.
His first advice was to gather information before going deeply into every chapter.
At the beginning of your preparation, review the structure of the study material, notice how the chapters are organized, and take notes on the main topics. Becoming familiar with the structure can make it easier to recall the information when you return to study each chapter in more detail.
This is also the time to research the exam itself. Understand the objectives, the style of the questions, and the topics that may carry the most weight. Identify which chapters seem easier based on your current knowledge and which ones may require more time.
He also recommended using different resources, such as YouTube videos and websites, before and after studying a chapter. Sometimes hearing the same concept explained in another way can make it easier to understand.
Another important part of this stage is trying at least three different types of sample exams. Sample exams can help you understand how the questions are written, recognize common patterns, and discover the areas where your knowledge is still weak.

After gathering information, identify the main topics that may represent around 60 to 80 percent of the exam.
This does not mean ignoring the remaining material. It means using your study time wisely and giving more attention to the topics that form the core of the exam.
Your study plan should also reflect your personal strengths and weaknesses. A chapter that feels easy to someone else may be difficult for you, and that is completely normal.
For my OCP Java 21 preparation, some topics may only need a quick review, while others may require reading, writing code, testing different examples, and completing more practice questions. Knowing this early helps me avoid treating every chapter as though it requires the same amount of time.

It feels good to study familiar material. You can move through it quickly, answer the questions correctly, and feel like you completed a lot of work.
However, being busy does not always mean you are improving.
Real progress often happens when you spend time on the topics that feel confusing or uncomfortable. You may need to read the explanation again, write more code examples, watch another video, or ask someone for help.
For me, this means being honest about the Java concepts I understand and the ones I still struggle with. After researching the exam, reviewing the chapter structure, taking notes, and trying sample questions, the next step is creating a consistent study routine.
My friend recommended studying for two to three focused hours each day without distractions.
Before beginning a study session, decide exactly what you want to accomplish. You may choose to study one section, review a difficult concept, write code examples, or complete a group of practice questions.
Taking notes is also helpful, but the goal should not be to copy the entire book. Notes should capture important rules, helpful examples, mistakes you made, and explanations that made a difficult concept easier to understand.

At the end of each chapter, complete an assessment or answer practice questions.
Before moving to the next chapter, and recall what you learned. Try to explain the main ideas without looking at your notes. You can also write a small code example from memory or explain the topic as though you were teaching it to someone else.
Information may feel clear while the book is open, but the real test is whether you can remember and apply it without looking at the explanation.
When you answer a question incorrectly, do not only look at the correct answer and move on. Try to understand what caused the mistake. Was it a concept you did not understand, a small detail you missed, or confusing wording in the question?

My friend suggested preparing the materials and choosing the next topic before going to sleep. Place your book, notebook, practice questions, and any other resources you need in one place.
After getting enough sleep, you can wake up with more energy and begin without spending time deciding what to study.
This may seem like a small habit, but it removes one more barrier between planning to study and actually beginning.
The OCP Java 21 certification may be the visible result, but the preparation is helping me build something deeper.
It is helping me identify gaps in my Java knowledge, improve my study habits, and become more comfortable working through difficult concepts.
AI can support this process by explaining topics, generating examples, and helping me review my mistakes. However, the responsibility to understand the material is still mine.
I need enough knowledge to evaluate the code AI produces, recognize when something may be incorrect, and make informed decisions instead of accepting every answer without question.
Preparing for this certification is one step toward becoming the T-shaped developer I want to be: someone with broad knowledge across software development and deeper expertise in Java.
