What Sam Altman Wouldn’t Ask ChatGPT

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said he would never ask ChatGPT how to be happy, advising instead to ask a wise person, a remark that highlights AI's inability to experience emotions. The United States ranked 23rd in the 2026 World Happiness Report, its lowest-ever ranking, and the Harvard Study of Adult Development, spanning nearly 80 years, found that close relationships are the strongest predictor of happiness and longevity.

Artificial Intelligence

What Harvard, a spiritual teacher, and your vagus nerve know about AI limits. #

Key points

  • Happiness comes from relationships, not achievement or information.
  • Breathwork and meditation help reduce stress and rewire the brain for peace.
  • AI can explain happiness, but it cannot truly experience or cultivate it.

When OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was asked what he would never turn to ChatGPT for, his answer seemed to me to be disarmingly honest: "I think I would never ask it, like, how to be happy. I would rather ask a wise person." That's a remarkable admission from the man who helped build what is among the world's most powerful AI chatbots.

And yet, I did exactly what he advised against—I asked ChatGPT how to be happy. The response was thoughtful, well-organized, and, in a certain way, correct. It listed the usual suspects: cultivate relationships, practice gratitude, exercise, sleep, find meaning, limit social media. If you were looking for a tidy summary of the scientific literature, it delivered.

The Limits of AI and Happiness #

Which raises the real question: Why can't AI tell us how to be happy? The blunt answer is that ChatGPT has no emotions, no lived experience, and no stake in whether you wake up tomorrow feeling joy or despair. It can synthesize vast libraries of psychology research and perhaps produce a competent listicle.

But happiness is not an information problem; it is an experiential one. One of the people responsible for ChatGPT essentially acknowledged that some human questions require a human—or at least something that has felt something. A large language model can describe happiness the way a travel guidebook describes Paris. Neither has ever actually been there.

The World Is Not Getting Happier #

Before we talk about how to become happy, it's worth asking: How happy are we, actually?

This conversation matters because the data tells a worrying story. The United States ranked 23rd in the 2026 World Happiness Report, its lowest-ever ranking, with young adults faring particularly poorly. Globally, happiness indices have plateaued or declined across many high-income nations, even as material prosperity has grown. If information and abundance were enough to make us happy, we would already be the happiest civilization in history. Clearly, something else is at work.

What Actually Makes People Happy—Or Unhappy? #

Science has a fairly consistent answer, and it has little to do with achievement or optimization. The Harvard Study of Adult Development, one of the longest-running studies of human flourishing, now spanning nearly 80 years, found that close relationships, more than money, fame, or even genes, are the single strongest predictor of happiness and longevity. Its lead researchers concluded: "The key to healthy aging is relationships."

Following Sam Altman’s advice to seek wisdom from a wise person, I turned to someone I consider a wise person: Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, a spiritual guide and founder of the Art of Living Foundation. His perspective adds another dimension: Happiness is not something you acquire from outside but something you uncover within. "Deep inside you is a fountain of bliss, a fountain of joy," he said. "There is no guilt there. There is no fear there." He also reminded me, pointedly: "If you are a taker of happiness you get misery; if you are a giver of happiness you get joy and love."

Rather than chasing happiness directly, consider flipping the question: What makes us unhappy? This is, in essence, the approach of yogic philosophy—remove the obstacles, and what remains is your natural state of equanimity. Think about the small daily triggers: A colleague doesn't send a critical document, and your morning unravels. Someone blames you for something you didn't do, and your mind churns on it for hours. These are not tragedies, yet they can hijack our peace entirely. If we can identify and gradually neutralize these micro-disturbances, we stop leaking happiness. What's left over doesn't need to be manufactured; it simply is.

Meditation: Rewiring the Brain for Happiness #

If happiness is a practice, and [stress](https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/stress) is its primary obstacle, [meditation](https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/meditation) is arguably one of the most evidence-based tools we have. Meditation produces measurable, lasting physiological changes. Research shows that regular practice [reduces cortisol](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5069287/)—the body's primary stress [hormone](https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/hormones)—alongside [structural changes in brain](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16272874/) regions governing [emotional regulation](https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/emotion-regulation). Meditation doesn't just shift your mood; it physically restructures the brain that generates “unhappiness.”

Not everyone can sit still. Fortunately, there is an even simpler entry point: breathwork. The vagus nerve—the tenth cranial nerve—is the main highway of the parasympathetic ("rest and digest") nervous system. Controlled, deliberate breathing directly stimulates it. Pranayama-style breathing at roughly 6 breaths per minute synchronizes cardiorespiratory rhythms at the resonant frequency, enhancing vagal tone and baroreflex sensitivity (Lehrer and Gevirtz).

One particular rhythmic breathwork practice—Sudarshan Kriya Yoga (SKY)—has been studied in different populations. A Stanford University study showed that SKY was able to normalize veterans’ anxiety in one week, with benefits that persisted at one year. A recent randomized trial in JAMA Network Open found that SKY significantly reduced stress, anxiety,

You can breathe anywhere. You do not need an app. You do not need ChatGPT.

So Where Does That Leave AI? #

ChatGPT is extraordinary at information. In my view, if you don't know what gratitude journaling is, or what the Harvard Study of Adult Development found, or what controlled breathing does—ask away. Generative AI can be a fine tutor.

But happiness is not a fact to retrieve. It is a state to cultivate every day, in small moments: when someone blames you unfairly, when the email doesn't arrive, when the mind begins to churn. In those moments, one of the best tools that can help is the one you have already practiced: a breath, a meditation, a call to someone you love, a deliberate refusal to hand over your peace of mind.

Sam Altman was right to ask a wise man. Better yet, become one.

Disclosure: Dr. Chhatwal has practiced meditation and breathwork techniques, including SKY (Sudarshan Kriya Yoga), for over 20 years and volunteers as a teacher of these techniques with the Art of Living Foundation. He has no financial relationship or official affiliation with the foundation.
