If you were looking for a tidy summary of the scientific literature, it delivered.\n\n## The Limits of AI and Happiness\n\nWhich raises the real question: Why can't AI tell us how to be happy? The blunt answer is that ChatGPT has no emotions, no lived experience, and no stake in whether you wake up tomorrow feeling joy or despair. It can synthesize vast libraries of psychology research and perhaps produce a competent listicle.\n\nBut [happiness](https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/happiness) is not an information problem; it is an experiential one. One of the people responsible for ChatGPT essentially acknowledged that some human questions require a human—or at least something that has felt something. A large language model can describe happiness the way a travel guidebook describes Paris. Neither has ever actually been there.\n\n## The World Is Not Getting Happier\n\nBefore we talk about how to become happy, it's worth asking: How happy are we, actually?\n\nThis conversation matters because the data tells a worrying story. Generative AI can be a fine tutor.\n\nBut happiness is not a fact to retrieve. It is a state to cultivate every day, in small moments: when someone blames you unfairly, when the email doesn't arrive, when the mind begins to churn. In those moments, one of the best tools that can help is the one you have already practiced: a breath, a meditation, a call to someone you love, a deliberate refusal to hand over your peace of mind.\n\nSam Altman was right to ask a wise man.
