OpenAI has introduced an age-specific version of ChatGPT designed for users under 18, with additional safeguards, learning-focused features and parental controls. Parents or guardians can link their accounts to a teen’s ChatGPT account and manage certain settings, but OpenAI says these controls do not give them access to read or monitor their child’s conversations.
How ChatGPT for Teens Identifies Young Users #
ChatGPT for Teens is designed to activate automatically when OpenAI determines that an account belongs to someone under 18. The company says it uses a combination of information provided on the account, verified age details and its own age-prediction technology to make this assessment. Once enabled, users can continue accessing ChatGPT’s core features, but with additional settings and safeguards tailored to younger users.

Study Mode and Learning Tools Take Centre Stage #
The teen-focused version adds several features aimed at making ChatGPT more useful for education and everyday learning. Its Study Mode helps students work through problems by asking questions and providing step-by-step guidance instead of simply giving answers. Users also get Homework Reminders, along with quizzes and visual learning tools designed to reinforce concepts. Teens and their parents can also choose when Study Mode should automatically activate.
More Safety Measures and Parental Controls #
OpenAI says ChatGPT for Teens includes stronger protections around topics that could be particularly risky for minors, including self-harm, violence, eating disorders and sexually explicit or graphic content. Parents or guardians can link their accounts to manage selected settings, establish Quiet Hours and receive alerts in certain high-risk situations. The system will also remind teens to take breaks if they have been using ChatGPT for an extended period.
ChatGPT for Teens Starts Global Rollout #
OpenAI began rolling out ChatGPT for Teens globally to eligible users on both free and paid personal plans from August 18. The rollout is being phased, with Australia expected to receive full availability by September 8. OpenAI says access will continue expanding to more eligible users and regions over the following weeks.
