Trump on AI Extinction: Beating China Is the Bigger Concern

President Donald Trump dismissed concerns that artificial intelligence could cause human extinction, telling reporters in Dallas "No, I don't have any," and instead framed AI as a geopolitical contest in which the US leads China by roughly a year. Trump's remarks followed Anthropic pretraining researcher Jacob Coxon's resignation and his accusation that Anthropic and OpenAI are "racing straight to self-improving superintelligence," with Anthropic alignment science lead Evan Hubinger putting the odds of AI eradicating humanity at ">10% within the next decade." Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, argued for national-security pragmatism, while Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Rep. Greg Casar, D-Texas, proposed legislation to pause development.

President Donald Trump is not losing sleep over AI ending civilization, but falling behind Beijing is an entirely different story.

Speaking to reporters on the tarmac while departing Dallas, the president brushed off escalating warnings from AI researchers that artificial intelligence could trigger human extinction. Asked if he harbored any concerns about the technology wiping out humanity, Trump said, “No, I don’t have any.”

Instead, Trump framed the entire issue as an urgent geopolitical contest. “I have concerns that if we don’t win AI, we’re going to be put in a very bad position,” he said. He estimated that the US currently leads China by roughly a year, adding, “which is, you know, considered a lot.”

AI researchers sound the alarm #

Trump’s comments come amid renewed safety warnings from researchers at leading AI labs. The debate intensified after Anthropic pretraining researcher Jacob Coxon resigned and accused Anthropic and OpenAI of racing toward potentially dangerous self-improving systems.

“They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives,” Coxon wrote on X, asserting that teams building the systems “earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade.”

Evan Hubinger, the alignment science lead at Anthropic, publicly agreed with the warning, writing on X that he puts the chances of AI eradicating humanity at “>10% within the next decade.”

Several researchers have focused their warnings on recursive self-improvement, broadly referring to AI systems helping develop increasingly capable successors. “It’s hard to overstate how dangerous speeding towards RSI is,” wrote Jasmine Wang, who identified herself as an OpenAI alignment researcher. OpenAI Chief Scientist Jakub Pachocki similarly expressed a “strong expectation” that current momentum could sustain self-improvement, adding, “I am concerned no one is prepared for the consequences of a continued rapid rise in machine intelligence.”

Capitol Hill steps in #

The rift has swiftly migrated into federal politics. Some lawmakers are taking the apocalyptic warnings seriously, while others lean into national security pragmatism.

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, captured the national-security argument in comments to Forbes: “China’s going full speed ahead and whatever we do here, China’s not gonna stop … if there are gonna be killer robots, I’d rather they be American killer robots than Chinese killer robots.”

Conversely, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Rep. Greg Casar, D-Texas, proposed legislation that would the development of advanced AI systems until the federal government establishes safety standards. Rep. Lori Trahan, D-Mass., who announced plans for the bipartisan FRONTIER Act with Rep. Jay Obernolte, R-Calif., warned on X: “Safety researchers are resigning, powerful AI models are breaking out of their labs, and companies are racing ahead anyway.”

What this means for enterprise AI #

Trump’s remarks reinforce his administration’s focus on keeping the United States ahead of China in AI. However, prioritizing US competitiveness does not eliminate the operational risks businesses face when deploying increasingly capable systems.

For IT leaders, the immediate concerns are less speculative than human extinction. They include data exposure, unreliable outputs, cybersecurity vulnerabilities and AI systems acting without sufficient human oversight. Organizations should continue independently testing models, restricting access to sensitive systems and establishing clear accountability before deploying advanced AI in critical workflows.
