An agency official previously said consumption-based access is the next logical step in the OneGov program. #
Anthropic will offer federal, state and local agencies a 40% discount on token-based usage for Claude models under a OneGov deal announced Tuesday.
Under the new agreement, agencies do not need to make minimum purchases and can access the discount directly through resellers and on major cloud platforms.
OpenAI brokered a similar 50% discount with the General Services Administration on token-based usage through a 27-month-long OneGov agreement that kicked in at the beginning of the month.
“As agencies increasingly integrate AI into their regular operations, providing consumption-based access is the next logical step,” said Laura Stanton, acting commissioner of GSA’s Federal Acquisition Service, in a press release announcing the OpenAI deal.
Anthropic said in a blog post that the discounted Claude pricing would go into effect Tuesday and that the price cuts offered through the OneGov agreement "are estimated to save the government $1 billion."
The announcement comes days before a Claude OneGov deal is set to expire on Oct. 31. Under that expiring agreement, federal agencies have had access to Claude for Enterprise and Government for $1 per user.
Last week before the new Anthropic OneGov deal became public, the Department of Health and Human Services announced its intent to award a sole-source contract for Claude models.
The OneGov program has generated more than $1.8 billion in savings, including roughly $1.6 billion through AI agreements, GSA said in its release unveiling the new Claude discount.
