Instead, what the audience got was something that looked generically "Wagnerian" but lacked the specific human gestures that make live opera unsettling. The boos came immediately after the final curtain. That's a data point, not a review.
Why this feels different from other AI art backlash #
We've seen AI writing or painting draw criticism from traditionalists before. But opera is a hyper-social art form: a thousand people sit in the dark together, and the stage is a live assembly of voices, bodies, and machines. When the machines start generating the scenery based on a prompt like "Valhalla, melancholy, torchlight", you're not just changing aesthetics — you're changing the authority structure of the production. The audience might be right #
The boos could also be a legitimate artistic critique. The festival has a long tradition of scandalous productions, and the audience loves to boo — they booed the last director many times before the premiere ended. But the AI backlash feels deeper. It touches a fear that the human-director role is being diluted, that opera houses are using "innovation" to cut costs or to look modern, not because the art is better. I'd argue that a more conservative use of AI — for example, using it in rehearsals to visualize options before committing to physical sets — would have been welcomed. Instead, they made it a stage performer, and the stage itself rejected it.
Wagner's music dramas are about the limits of power and the impossibility of total control. A production that outsources its vision to an algorithm is a strange metaphor. But perhaps the boos are a reminder that audiences still expect the person who signs the program to have sweated over every choice. The AI can't sweat. That might be the whole problem.
