Summarize PDF and Excel

A user reported that Gemma 4 E4B running in LM Studio stalled at 0% on a roughly 200-page PDF and returned only a superficial summary after the file was split to under 100 pages, and that LM Studio could not handle Excel files. The recommended fix is to bypass LM Studio's RAG tool, which only retrieves a few prompt-matching chunks, and instead extract the PDF text externally, split it into context-sized chunks, summarize each chunk, then summarize the summaries so every page is read exactly once; Excel sheets should be exported to CSV and processed the same way.

Summarize PDF and Excel

I want to summarize a large pdf files approximately 200 pages using Gemma 4 E4B on LM Studio app but it cannot read the file it start reading and remained at 0% not moving and when I split the PDF files to less than 100 pages it gave me very superficial short answer not real summary

By the way I am enabling the rag tool on LM studio

Also LM studio could not handle EXCEL files

Any suggestions

The problem is the RAG tool itself: retrieval only hands the model a few chunks that match your prompt, so a summary built from them can only cover those chunks — which is why even the shorter file gave a superficial answer. Extract the text outside LM Studio instead (any PDF-to-text tool will do), split it into chunks that fit the model’s context, summarize each chunk, then summarize those summaries together — every page is read exactly once, and LM Studio never has to ingest the 200-page file at all. For Excel, export each sheet to CSV first and treat it the same way. You can check the difference with one question about the final pages: the RAG version will usually miss it, the chunked version will not.
