Stripe Inc. is looking into buying OpenRouter, an AI model marketplace based in New York, for a massive $10 billion. This move would really branch Stripe out from just doing payments and put them right in the middle of AI infrastructure. What’s wild is that OpenRouter was worth $1.3 billion back in May, so a $10 billion deal would mean their value jumped nearly eight times in just a few months.
What OpenRouter does
OpenRouter gives more than five million developers access to hundreds of models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and open-weight providers through one interface. Customers can compare models, switch providers, and route requests without building a separate integration for each company. The platform has capitalized on enterprise efforts to control costs and reduce dependence on dominant providers by diversifying model usage.
Started back in 2023, OpenRouter basically works like a middleman for businesses, making it super easy for them to check out, use, and jump between tons of different AI models all in one place.
Stripe’s AI ambitions
For Stripe, the acquisition would mark a substantial expansion beyond payments into AI infrastructure. Stripe, which reached a $159 billion valuation earlier this year, already processes OpenRouter’s payments, invoicing, tax collection, and fraud tools. Buying the company would move Stripe beyond processing AI revenue and into the infrastructure developers use to access, compare, and pay for models. The potential deal reflects Stripe’s aggressive dealmaking appetite as it seeks new growth vectors across advanced technology and digital finance, following its recent unsolicited $53 billion offer for PayPal alongside private equity firm Advent International.
The $1.3B to $10B valuation leap
OpenRouter’s explosive valuation growth reflects the market’s recognition of its strategic importance. Just two months before the acquisition talks, the company had raised a $113 million Series B led by CapitalG (Alphabet’s growth venture fund), achieving a $1.3 billion valuation, more than double its previous round.
The platform is absolutely crushing it right now, processing 25 trillion tokens every week; that is a massive 5 times increase from just six months ago. With over 8 million global users checking out more than 400 models from over 60 different providers, OpenRouter has basically become the go-to spot for companies that don’t want to get stuck with just one provider. This shift away from vendor lock-in is a huge deal that could totally change how the AI industry works.
Even OpenRouter’s founder, Alex Atallah, pointed out that his company does something very similar to what Stripe does by acting as the connective tissue between customers and services. It is pretty funny that Stripe is now looking to buy the very company everyone is calling the “Stripe for AI.”
