SpaceX has closed its $60 billion acquisition of Cursor, the AI coding assistant built by Anysphere, folding the entire team into its SpaceXAI division. The deal, finalized on August 14, 2026, ranks among the largest acquisitions in tech history and cements SpaceX’s ambitions well beyond rockets and satellite internet.
How the deal came together #
The acquisition didn’t materialize overnight. SpaceX and Cursor first entered a partnership in April 2026, which included an option for SpaceX to acquire the company outright. If negotiations had fallen apart, SpaceX would have faced substantial fees and resource commitments, a structure that essentially made the deal a question of when, not if.
The formal acquisition agreement was signed on June 16, 2026, just weeks after SpaceX completed a blockbuster IPO that raised approximately $75 billion. That IPO gave SpaceX the financial firepower to execute an all-stock transaction of this magnitude.
What SpaceX gets #
The integration plan goes beyond just bolting Cursor onto existing infrastructure. SpaceX intends to pair Cursor’s capabilities with its own compute resources, including the Colossus supercomputer. That combination of software expertise and raw computational power is aimed at advancing AI models like Grok 4.6.
SpaceXAI itself was established earlier in 2026 after SpaceX acquired xAI. The Cursor acquisition represents the second major AI integration under the SpaceXAI umbrella.
The founders’ payday #
Cursor was co-founded by Michael Truell, Aman Sanger, Sualeh Asif, and Arvid Lunnemark. Post-acquisition, each co-founder’s net worth is estimated at approximately $2.7 billion. The all-stock structure means their fortunes are now directly tied to SpaceX’s performance.
