Streaming and centralized production
TVNewsCheck reported from an Aug. 4 employee memo that Scripps will begin 24/7 local news streams in about a dozen smaller markets and eventually extend the model across its local-station group. Scheduled television newscasts will remain, while reporters and editors publish stories, live updates and video throughout the day.
The same memo described a hub model for digital production and greater use of automation. Company leadership said the goal is to move resources away from repeatable production tasks and toward local reporting. In its second-quarter release, Scripps said revenue was $490 million, down 9.2% from a year earlier. The company recorded a $1.2 billion shareholder loss, or $12.68 per share, primarily because of a $1.1 billion non-cash impairment charge in its networks business. That reported loss should not be confused with adjusted per-share measures used in some market coverage.
Scripps now expects to have implemented about $100 million in annual run-rate savings by year-end. Its broader transformation plan targets $125 million to $150 million of annualized enterprise EBITDA growth by 2028 through cost reductions and revenue initiatives. The company says AI, automation and other technology are part of that plan, but the savings target covers the wider restructuring rather than a disclosed AI-only contribution.
