Razer and the National University of Singapore have launched a joint AI research lab aimed at giving your desk a companion that remembers your schedule, checks the weather and coaches your next ranked match.
The Razer-NUS Joint AI Research Lab opened on August 5, 2026, a partnership between the Singapore gaming hardware maker and NUS's School of Computing. According to Razer's newsroom announcement, the lab exists to push foundational AI research toward what it calls Gaming Artificial Narrow Intelligence, or GANI, a research domain built specifically for AI models that operate inside interactive digital environments rather than general chat. Professor Yan Shuicheng is the lab's principal investigator, working alongside co-directors Associate Professor Ooi Wei Tsang and Dr Wee Hong Jie, with Professor Tulika Mitra, dean of the NUS School of Computing, backing the initiative from the university side.
Three things are the actual work: core model innovation, real-time content systems and advanced personalization. That's not academic throat-clearing. It maps directly onto a product Razer has already shown the public.
The hologram already exists #
That product is Project AVA, the 3D holographic desk companion Razer unveiled at CES 2026 in Las Vegas this past January. It's a 5.5-inch animated hologram housed in a cylindrical unit with a dual far-field microphone array, an HD camera with ambient light sensors, and Razer's signature Chroma RGB lighting. Users pick an avatar: AVA herself, the sharper-tongued Kira, or Faker, modeled on Lee Sang-hyeok, the professional League of Legends player. Razer says the facial expressions and eye tracking on those avatars were built with Animation Inc.
Here's the part that actually matters for anyone tracking the AI hardware race: Project AVA currently runs on xAI's Grok engine for its PC Vision Mode, the feature that lets it read your screen over a USB-C connection and comment on your gameplay or your spreadsheet. The Razer-NUS lab is the mechanism by which that dependency changes. Building GANI models in-house, purpose-made for gaming contexts, is how Razer stops renting its companion's brain from someone else.
Razer already updated AVA once since the CES reveal. At GDC 2026 in March, the company pushed what it called an agentic update, moving the assistant from reactive answers toward tasks it can carry out on its own. Reservations for the physical device are open now in the US for a $20 deposit, with Razer targeting a release in the second half of 2026. The company hasn't published a final retail price.
The real bet #
Frankly, the interesting bet here isn't the hologram. Hardware companies have tried desk gadgets before and most of them gathered dust. The bet is that gaming is a narrower, more tractable problem than general-purpose AI, and that a model trained specifically to understand match state, player skill and in-game dialogue will beat a general chatbot bolted onto a novelty display. That's the wager, in one line. GANI's stated goals, an AI teammate that adjusts tactics to your skill level, generates context-aware objectives in real time, and tunes difficulty mid-match, are the kind of narrow, measurable claims you can actually test against a leaderboard, unlike most AI companion marketing.
Min-Liang Tan, Razer's co-founder and chief executive, has been making this argument in public for months. He told Bloomberg at CES 2026 that AI investment and strategy now sit at the center of Razer's roadmap, not at the edges of it. That's the tell. Pairing that ambition with an academic lab gives Razer something a pure hardware shop doesn't usually have: a pipeline of published research and PhD-trained talent instead of a single product team racing a launch date.
Whether GANI produces anything that outperforms Grok inside AVA is an open question NUS and Razer haven't answered yet, and won't for a while. Universities move on research timelines, not product cycles. The companion ships to reservation holders later this year regardless of how far the lab has gotten by then.
