This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 4: Ghost in the Machine What I Built
PHANTOM IDE is an AI-powered development environment designed to make software investigation, code understanding, and debugging more intelligent.
Traditional development environments provide developers with tools to write and edit code, but understanding unfamiliar codebases, tracing problems, and investigating complex code behaviour can still be challenging.
PHANTOM IDE approaches this differently.
Rather than simply acting as another code editor with an AI assistant, PHANTOM IDE focuses on helping developers investigate their codebase.
The idea behind PHANTOM IDE is simple: your codebase has a story, and developers deserve better tools to uncover it.

How I Built It
PHANTOM IDE was built using modern technologies for desktop application development, AI integration, and collaborative software development.
Technology Stack:
•Electron – Desktop application framework.
•React – Frontend user interface.
•TypeScript – Application logic and type safety.
•Monaco Editor – Code editing experience.
•Ollama – Local AI inference and model management.
•Qwen – Open-weight AI model powering AI capabilities.
•Git & GitHub – Version control, source code management, and open-source collaboration.
Development Approach
PHANTOM IDE integrates locally running AI models through Ollama, allowing developers to use AI-powered code investigation without depending entirely on proprietary cloud-based APIs.
The project is open-source under the MIT License, making it accessible to developers who want to explore, contribute, and build upon it.
Why Does Open Innovation Matter?
Open innovation is important because developers should have control over the tools they use and the data they work with.
By integrating open-weight AI models through Ollama, PHANTOM IDE explores an alternative to applications that depend entirely on closed AI APIs.
This approach provides several advantages:
•Greater control over AI model selection.
•Local inference and improved data privacy.
•Reduced dependence on external AI services.
•Opportunities for customization and experimentation.
•More accessible AI-powered development tools.
Open-source AI makes it possible to build powerful developer tools without locking the entire experience behind proprietary services.
The Spirit of It
Every codebase has hidden stories.
Sometimes, the most difficult part of software development isn't writing another line of code. It's discovering why something works, why something broke, and what happened before you arrived.
PHANTOM IDE was built around that idea.
Like a ghost hiding in a machine, problems and unexpected behaviours can remain buried inside a codebase until someone investigates them.
PHANTOM IDE aims to make those investigations easier.
