Orchid's viral anniversary ad backfires into a debate over AI and intimacy

Orchid, a texting-based AI assistant from Y Combinator's Spring 2025 batch founded by Nizar Abi Zaher and Adam Wazzan, faced backlash after its anniversary ad on X depicted the bot handling a boyfriend's forgotten anniversary, sparking debate over AI's role in emotional labor. WIRED reported that critics called the ad 'adult babies' and a tool for 'perpetuating' dead-end relationships, while therapist Lauren Maher warned that outsourcing difficult communication is a form of triangulation. The controversy highlights a broader industry issue where AI startups blur the line between automating tasks and automating emotional signals.

Orchid's anniversary ad turned a simple assistant pitch into a sharper argument about what people should never quietly outsource to software.

The Orchid video landed on X in the last week of July and gave the internet an easy target. A boyfriend has forgotten his anniversary. Orchid, a texting-based AI assistant, steps in to remind him, make the reservation, buy the flowers and keep the girlfriend updated while the human being in the middle catches up.

That is useful if you're late for a meeting. It feels different when you're late to your own relationship.

WIRED reported that the promo showed the boyfriend, Sam, texting Orchid after the assistant reminds him what day it is. The bot replies, "You can't. That's why I'm here," then handles the reservation and the flowers. The girlfriend also appears to know Orchid is doing the work, which makes the ad stranger rather than cleaner: everyone sees the emotional labor being routed through software, and the story still asks you to treat the gesture as romantic.

The backlash was immediate. WIRED noted that X users blasted the pitch as advertising to "adult babies uninterested in the world they live in" and as a tool for "perpetuating" dead-end relationships. Harsh, yes. But not hard to understand. The anger wasn't really about lilies or dinner bookings. It was about who gets credit for remembering.

The Product Is More Boring Than the Ad #

Orchid itself is not a relationship app. Its Y Combinator profile describes the company as "a personal EA in your iMessage," founded by Nizar Abi Zaher and Adam Wazzan as part of YC's Spring 2025 batch. The same profile says Orchid texts you your day each morning, drafts replies and books meetings after you approve the action. That is the ordinary assistant pitch, and frankly, it's a pitch plenty of busy people already understand.

Email drafts are not the problem. Meeting bookings are not the problem. A morning briefing is just a morning briefing.

The ad moved the product from admin work into emotional work, and that changed the room. A tool that reminds you about a call sits in one category. A tool that rescues you from disappointing your partner sits in another. If you've ever been on the receiving end of a forgotten birthday, anniversary or promise, you know the issue isn't only the missed reservation. It's the absence of attention before the panic.

WIRED also quoted Lauren Maher, a licensed marriage and family therapist in Los Angeles, warning that trying to outsource difficult communication prevents couples from facing the harder parts of their relationship. She described the AI setup as a form of triangulation, where two people communicate through a third party instead of speaking directly. That is the part Orchid's ad seemed not to notice. In couples therapy, the third party is usually not an app with your calendar and contacts.

The Line AI Startups Keep Missing #

The wider AI industry keeps running into this problem because its favourite language is too broad. Automate your life. Handle everything. Never forget. Those lines sound impressive until the thing being automated is not a task but a signal that another person matters to you.

Replika and Character.AI have already made emotional chat with software feel normal to millions of users. Orchid's ad pushed a different idea: not just talking to a bot about a feeling, but letting a bot act inside a human relationship. That deserves scrutiny. You can use software to remember an anniversary without pretending the software felt anything, noticed anything or cared.

There is a cleaner version of this product story. Orchid reminds Sam in the morning. Sam chooses the restaurant, writes the message, buys the flowers and tells his girlfriend he nearly forgot but got help. That version is not glamorous, but it is honest. The published ad chose the more viral version, where the bot does the work and the human keeps the shine.

Orchid left the clip up, and the ad did its job regardless. WIRED's July 31 coverage shows the backlash was current, visible and loud - loud enough to move the story well beyond startup circles. For a YC company trying to get people to notice a new assistant, that counts. Hostile attention counts too.

But you should be careful about what kind of attention you train your product to chase. The anniversary ad made Orchid look capable, but it also made the product look willing to blur a line most people still want left alone. Help me remember is fine. Let me take credit for what the machine remembered is something else.

That is where the backlash came from. Not from people failing to understand AI, but from people understanding the ad perfectly.
