Etsy Bans AI-Generated Listings but Sellers Say It Still Isn't Working

Etsy rolled out new rules on October 22 banning AI-generated patterns, recipes and instructional content, requiring sellers to post at least one unedited photo of the actual item and to disclose AI photo editing, and prohibiting fully automated AI listings. Sellers say the policy is already failing because enforcement still relies on the same detection systems that pulled more than 17,000 listings in early 2025 for AI disclosure violations, a chunk of them genuinely handmade, and because nothing in the announcement changes how search ranking works. Etsy's new buyer reporting tool will initially only collect information rather than trigger immediate action, and UK-based illustrator Viktor told Marketplace that people have stopped trusting sites like Etsy because they're tired of AI slop infecting the platform.

Etsy told sellers it would clean up the AI slop drowning its marketplace. Instead it handed them a policy they say is already failing to enforce, while the mass-produced listings it was supposed to stop keep outranking the real thing.

On October 22, Etsy rolled out new rules banning AI-generated patterns, recipes and other instructional content. That's the kind of listing where, as the company put it, a buyer has to "put in effort to achieve a finished product." Sellers now have to show at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background. Anyone editing photos with AI has to say so in the listing. Fully automated AI listings, generated and posted without a human doing anything, are no longer allowed either. According to CNBC, the ban covers knitting, crochet, sewing, embroidery, quilting and beading patterns, along with woodworking plans and instruction manuals. AI-generated art can still be sold, as long as the seller had a real hand in making it and says so.

Etsy's problem is that it already tried to police AI content, and it went badly. More than 17,000 listings got pulled in early 2025 for AI disclosure violations. A chunk of those were genuinely handmade items, flagged by an algorithm that couldn't tell the difference. Sellers who went through that round aren't assuming this one will be cleaner.

Digital Commerce 360 reported that Etsy's new reporting tool lets buyers flag suspected AI listings. At first it will just collect information rather than trigger immediate action. Removals still depend on the same detection systems sellers already don't trust.

Viktor, a UK-based illustrator, told Marketplace that people have stopped trusting sites like Etsy because they're tired of AI slop infecting the platform. That's the bind Etsy is actually in. It needs buyers to believe the crackdown works, and it needs sellers to believe the enforcement is fair. Right now neither side is convinced.

The business reasons for acting are real. Etsy spent much of 2025 watching its active seller base shrink, with sellers citing a crackdown on fakes and new fees alongside the flood of AI-made goods. Kruti Patel Goyal became Etsy's CEO on January 1 after running Depop. She inherited a marketplace where cheap AI-made goods were already undercutting the human sellers Etsy has spent two decades telling buyers to trust. The turnaround is still fragile, even as active buyers and sellers have recently returned to growth.

Why sellers don't believe the fix will hold #

The core complaint isn't that Etsy picked the wrong rules. Banning AI-written knitting patterns and fake recipe cards is a reasonable line to draw. The complaint is that Etsy has a track record of enforcing these things unevenly, pulling real handmade listings while AI-flooded ones keep showing up in search. Sellers say AI-supported listings still outrank their own and undercut them on price, and nothing in the October 22 announcement changes how search ranking actually works. A disclosure requirement only matters if Etsy can tell who's lying. The same detection tools that wrongly pulled thousands of listings last year are the ones expected to do that job now.

Fortune reported that buyers may be returning following the policy change, but sellers wrongly flagged last year have little reason to expect better this time.
