Oracle urges database customers to prepare for quantum security risks

Oracle Corp. is urging database customers to prepare for quantum security risks, with Vipin Samar, Oracle's senior vice president of software engineering for database security, warning that encrypted traffic copied today can be decrypted once sufficiently powerful quantum computers arrive. Oracle introduced Cryptographic Posture Assessment in Oracle Data Safe, which assesses cryptographic configurations across database fleets and flags weak spots such as lingering TLS 1.0 and 1.1 support, with agentic AI-driven remediation in preview. Samar said Deep Data Security in Oracle AI Database 26ai uses signed OAuth2 tokens to identify the end user behind an AI agent's query, securing data at the source rather than across each application.

Oracle urges database customers to prepare for quantum security risks

Attackers can copy encrypted traffic today and decrypt it once quantum computers mature, making quantum-resistant cryptography a present-day concern.

Oracle Corp. is applying the philosophy behind its security controls beneath AI agents to encryption across database fleets, according to Vipin Samar (pictured), senior vice president of software engineering, database security, at Oracle.

“Even though we don’t have quantum computers which are sufficiently powerful today, when they come, that can create a risk because people can make a copy of your encrypted data today,” Samar said. “Your TLS 1.2 traffic, 1.3 traffic, I can make a copy of it. And then when quantum becomes available, I can figure out the session key and decrypt … your entire sensitive data.”

Samar spoke with theCUBE Research’s Dave Vellante at Oracle AI World, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed security concerns related to quantum-resistant cryptography. ( Disclosure below.)*

Quantum-resistant cryptography starts with fleet-level visibility

Oracle’s new Cryptographic Posture Assessment in Oracle Data Safe assesses cryptographic configurations across database fleets, flagging weak spots such as lingering TLS 1.0 and 1.1 support. Agentic AI-driven remediation is in preview, Samar noted.

“It doesn’t help if network encryption is strong, but other parts are actually on the weaker side. And this becomes a challenge, especially when PQC or the quantum computers come along because they can attempt to hack into any of those systems,” Samar said.

Deep Data Security, which enforces row- and column-level access in Oracle AI Database 26ai, uses signed OAuth2 tokens to identify the end user behind an AI agent’s query. Oracle treats AI as one more application accessing the same data.

“We said instead of sprinkling this dust everywhere, why don’t we secure at the source?” Samar said. “When you move something inside the database, you get great security because there are no ways to bypass it.”
