OpenAI appears to be preparing three paid and free tiers for developers using its platform, including an Accelerate option starting at $50, according to TestingCatalog's report. The report describes an onboarding flow, not a public launch announcement, and says the screen does not establish that developers will be able to host complete apps there.

In a post linked by TestingCatalog, Altman told developers, "See you next week." OpenAI's DevDay is scheduled for September 29th in San Francisco, six days after TestingCatalog published its report. The proposed ladder would package a familiar progression - experimenting, prototyping, then running production workloads - into the first steps of OpenAI's API platform. That could make it easier for a new developer to start without first navigating a metered API setup, while giving OpenAI a clearer route to sell higher usage as projects grow. The price and tier labels alone do not show what usage is included, where the limits fall, or whether the plans bundle model access with hosting, compute or other services.
That last distinction matters because OpenAI already offers managed infrastructure for a narrower workload. On September 10th, OpenAI introduced its Agents API, which runs long-lived agents using an OpenAI-managed Codex harness. Developers can choose OpenAI-hosted sandboxes or connect their own environments and infrastructure partners. OpenAI says the API itself adds no separate fee during its public beta; model use and hosted sandboxes are billed at their standard rates. That product runs agents and code in sandboxes. It does not, by itself, establish a general service for deploying and hosting finished applications.
The distinction puts a limit on the broadest claim in the X thread that surfaced the plans. A platform that takes developers from an API experiment to a hosted, production app would compete for more of the application stack than an API dashboard does. The reported plan names and descriptions point toward that ambition, but TestingCatalog's article says it remains unclear whether developers will be able to deploy complete apps directly through the platform.
For now, the concrete signal is a change to the developer entry point and the way OpenAI may segment access. The reported descriptions suggest the Free tier is for exploration, Prototype for small builds and Accelerate for heavier production use. They do not reveal whether the $50 buys credits, capacity, a subscription, or some combination, or whether app hosting is part of the offer. OpenAI's Agents API shows the company already manages an agent runtime and offers hosted execution alongside API access. The newly reported plans would sit at a broader point in the developer journey if they become available as described. DevDay is the next dated venue for OpenAI to detail developer tools, but the current evidence ties the tiers to an observed onboarding flow, not to a confirmed event launch.
