The version for users aged 13 to 17 adds parental controls, quiet hours, break reminders and a guided Study Mode.
OpenAI has launched ChatGPT for Teens, a version of its chatbot for users aged 13 to 17 with expanded parental controls and additional safety and learning features.
The version becomes the default for teenagers who register their birthdays. OpenAI said it will also switch users to the teen model when its systems detect that they fall within the age range, without explaining the detection method.
OpenAI said stronger safeguards are intended to reduce exposure to content involving violence, self-harm, eating disorders and dangerous activities.
The model will also be less likely to imply that it has personal feelings, consciousness or emotions. It will provide more frequent break reminders and let teens and parents set quiet hours when the chatbot cannot be used.
A Study Mode developed with teachers, scientists and education specialists will use guiding questions and homework reminders to help users work through academic material instead of directly supplying answers.
A related Study Hours feature will schedule Study Mode by default, with controls available to teenagers and their parents.
OpenAI will partner with education nonprofit Code AI to provide students and teachers with resources about how the technology works and how to use it constructively.
