Sam Yam, Patreon's co-founder and CTO, is bringing two senior colleagues to build AI-native tools for creators at OpenAI
OpenAI just raided one of the creator economy’s most important companies. Sam Yam, who co-founded Patreon more than 13 years ago and served as its President and CTO, announced on September 23 that he’s joining OpenAI to lead a new Creator Product division. He’s not coming alone.
Drew Rowny, Patreon’s former head of product, and Shannon Ma, the company’s former head of engineering, are both making the jump as well. Both stepped down from Patreon in recent weeks. For a company that helped creators earn more than $10 billion since 2013, losing its technology co-founder and two senior product leaders in rapid succession is a meaningful talent drain.
What OpenAI is building #
The details are still taking shape, but Yam’s announcement on X offered a clear directional signal. He said the team plans to “build together with Creators at OpenAI and share early access to a new set of tools that I think will be critically valuable to Creators and their communities.”
OpenAI’s upcoming DevDay event could serve as a launchpad for previewing whatever the team has been working on.

Why Patreon’s brain trust matters #
Patreon isn’t just any startup. Founded in 2013 by musician Jack Conte and Yam, it essentially invented the modern creator subscription model. The platform has now moved more than $10 billion to creators.
Yam was the technical architect behind that system. He built the infrastructure that handles payments, membership tiers, messaging, and the analytics dashboard that creators use to understand their audiences. Rowny led the product decisions that shaped how creators interact with the platform daily. Ma ran the engineering teams that kept it all working at scale.
Together, these three represent something rare in tech hiring: a pre-assembled team that has already shipped together for years. OpenAI isn’t just hiring expertise. It’s importing an entire operational playbook for serving creators.
