Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has finally joined X, but instead of making his first post about GPUs, AI chips, or the company’s latest hardware, he chose to talk about the future of artificial intelligence. His debut post highlights Nvidia’s support for open-weight AI models and links to an open letter signed by more than two dozen major technology companies.
In his first message, Huang said that AI will transform every industry and argued that both open and closed AI models have an important role to play. He also shared a statement titled “Open Weights and American AI Leadership,” which has been backed by companies including Meta, Microsoft, IBM, Perplexity, and several others.

The letter argues that open-weight AI models, which can be downloaded, inspected, modified, and run on private infrastructure, make advanced AI more accessible and encourage innovation. According to the signatories, these models help startups, businesses, universities, and researchers build AI applications without relying on a handful of providers or paying the cost of training a frontier model from scratch.

The statement also says that open AI models strengthen competition by giving organizations more control over their data and deployments while reducing dependence on a single company. It argues that a healthy mix of open and closed models will help drive AI adoption across industries, from healthcare and education to manufacturing and scientific research.
At the same time, the letter acknowledges that open-weight models come with risks. Once released, they can be modified by anyone, making them difficult to control. However, the companies behind the letter argue that restricting open models is not the right solution. Instead, they believe transparency allows researchers and security experts to identify vulnerabilities, improve defenses, and build safer AI systems over time.
The letter also urged U.S. policymakers to avoid placing unnecessary restrictions on open AI models. It called for greater investment in AI infrastructure, shared research resources, and broader access to computing power so that innovation can continue across the industry.
