Hermes Agent makes the harness, rather than any single model, the durable asset. That puts user control, switching costs and the path to revenue in the same software layer, while making operators responsible for securing it.
Nous Research used a Monday post on X to restate its strategic bet behind Hermes Agent: the durable part of an AI agent should be a harness controlled by its operator, even as models and providers change underneath it.
Nous Research was founded in 2023 by Jeffrey Quesnelle, Karan Malhotra, Ryan "Teknium" Teknium and Shivani Mitra. That team came to the argument through open models, synthetic data and distributed systems. Quesnelle, whom Nous Research identifies as its CTO, previously built nds4droid, an open-source Nintendo DS emulator that his LinkedIn profile says passed 8 million installs. His work also includes automotive software, cryptocurrency infrastructure and a University of Michigan-Dearborn master's thesis on anonymity in Zcash. Malhotra contributed to LAION's Open Assistant project before collaborating with Teknium on synthetic datasets and early Hermes fine-tunes.
Nous Research released Hermes Agent in February 2026. The project is roughly six months old as of August 24.
The timing matters because Nous Research is trying to turn a popular repository into the user-facing layer of an open AI stack. Monday's post sharpens that effort around operator ownership: model choice gets the attention, while control of memory, permissions, skills and execution history determines how difficult it is to leave an agent platform.
The harness becomes the durable layer
Hermes Agent is an MIT-licensed, self-hosted runtime that can operate on a laptop, virtual private server, cloud sandbox or larger compute environment. Operators can connect Nous Portal, OpenRouter, OpenAI or compatible custom endpoints, then switch models without rebuilding the agent's surrounding system.
Hermes maintains persistent user and agent files, searches prior sessions and creates reusable skills from completed work. It also supports scheduled jobs and isolated subagents. Its memory system can connect to external providers while keeping the built-in stores active.
That architecture gives operators a path to changing the intelligence provider without discarding the working context accumulated around it. A company could run one model for coding, another for research and a local endpoint for sensitive tasks while preserving the same agent identity and procedures. The harness governs what each model can remember, which tools it can reach and where its output gets executed.
Nous Research is entering a crowded field. OpenClaw, an open-source personal agent, is the closest comparison. Letta focuses on persistent memory, while Block's Goose, a local AI agent, emphasizes local execution and model flexibility. OpenAI's Codex CLI, Anthropic's Claude Code, Aider and OpenHands compete for adjacent developer workflows. Hermes makes a broader claim than a terminal coding assistant: it is designed to stay online, work across communication channels and retain an evolving record of how its operator works.
Sovereignty comes with administrator duties
Self-hosting moves control toward the operator. It also moves operational risk in the same direction.
Nous Research's security policy advises operators to isolate deployments, avoid exposing them publicly and review third-party skills.
That is the cost hidden inside the word "sovereignty." An operator gains control over deployment, credentials and data flows, then assumes responsibility for updates, network exposure, plugin review and host isolation. A managed agent vendor makes many of those choices centrally. Hermes lets the deployer make them, including the bad ones.
Nous Research needs a business above the weights
Nous Research began as an open-model lab, describing its mission as advancing human freedom through the unrestricted availability and use of language models. Hermes Agent extends that position into software people can run every day. It also gives Nous Research a distribution channel for Nous Portal. TechCrunch reported that hosted plans ranged from $20 to $200 a month.
That connection matters as investors press open-source AI developers to build revenue beyond model releases. TechCrunch reported on July 13 that Nous Research was finalizing at least $75 million in financing led by Robot Ventures, with significant participation from Union Square Ventures, at a reported $1.5 billion valuation. Nous Research had not confirmed the transaction. The report said the proposed capital would support further expansion of Hermes products and the business around them.
Hermes gives the founders several routes forward. Nous Research can distribute the harness freely, sell hosted access through Portal and benefit when Hermes users consume models and tools supplied through its service. The open repository lowers adoption friction; the hosted layer sells convenience to users who want control without maintaining every component themselves.
Users may still replace an agent harness whenever a new framework arrives. Nous Research is betting that accumulated memory, skills and workflows will give Hermes staying power that model benchmarks cannot. Its four founders built the company around open weights. Hermes Agent carries that thesis into the software that decides what those weights are allowed to do.
