Moment robot hilariously collapses mid-presentation... before being covered up like a corpse

A robot built by Qualcomm Inc collapsed mid-presentation on stage, dropping its tray and flailing before being covered with a cloth and carried out by four men, drawing laughter and applause from the audience. The incident highlights ongoing challenges in perfecting humanoid robots despite Qualcomm's claims of industry-leading power efficiency and scalability for its robotics architecture.

You might be worried that [robots](/sciencetech/robots/index.html) and [AI](/sciencetech/ai/index.html) will take your job, or even take over the world.

But it looks like you might be safe for now – as new footage shows the moment a robot collapses mid-presentation before it is covered up like a corpse and taken out of the room.

In what appears to be the closest robots have gotten to mimicking the human attitude to giving a presentation – the machine hilariously buckles at the knees and drops the tray it's carrying.

The robot, built by Qualcomm Inc, was being used to deliver a device to the presenter on the stage.

Before the presenter could finish his speech, the robot crumbled – with gasps from the audience heard in the video.

In its final move before robot-death, it flailed its arms in the air on the floor.

Within seconds, though, in what seemed like a rehearsed manoeuvre, a cleanup crew covered up the downed robot with a cloth to hide it from view.

The android was then picked up by four men who struggled to get it out of the door.

Despite its failings, the robot was clapped out of the room – along with a chorus of laughter from the crowd.

Qualcomm Inc is the largest maker of smartphone processors in the world. It is based in San Diego in California.

It said on its website: 'Qualcomm’s general-purpose robotics architecture delivers industry-leading power efficiency, and scalability, enabling capabilities from personal service robots to next generation industrial autonomous mobile robots and full-size humanoids that can reason, adapt, and decide.'

The machines are built in with AI – but seemingly there is still work to be done to perfect the robots.

Another robot earlier this year smashed into pieces after it fell over in a training session for Beijing's humanoid half-marathon.

Footage posted online shows the black-and-white robot all set at the starting line, but suddenly tripping and falling after taking only a few steps.

In an instant, the machine smashed to smithereens, with pieces of its bodywork flying up into the air.

All that was left of the robot were its legs, flailing helplessly and left twitching on the ground.

But one robot managed to complete the race in record time.

The robot completed the 13.1-mile (21km) course in a blistering 50 minutes and 26 seconds, far faster than the 57 minutes and 20 seconds record set by Ugandan runner Jacob Kiplimo.

That was more than three times faster than last year's winning robot, which finished the race in a time of two hours and 40 minutes.

Qualcomm was contacted for comment.
