The tech giant's struggle to plug into Britain's aging power grid is a warning shot for every AI company racing to build infrastructure
Microsoft has a $3.2 billion problem, and it’s not a software bug. The company says it takes up to ten years to get a grid connection for new data centers in the United Kingdom, with some timelines stretching to 2035. For a company trying to win the AI infrastructure race, waiting a decade to turn on the lights is, to put it mildly, suboptimal.
The delays threaten Microsoft’s £2.5 billion ($3.2 billion) investment plan for expanding UK data center operations. Projects spanning Leeds, Newport, and London were originally targeting completion between 2027 and 2029. Those dates now look increasingly aspirational.
Britain’s grid can’t keep up with AI’s appetite #
The UK’s National Grid is buckling under demand from AI and cloud computing. The infrastructure simply wasn’t designed for what’s being asked of it.
Grid connection delays have become a common grievance among tech firms operating in the UK. The bottleneck is systemic, not company-specific.
Reports from March and April 2025 paint a picture of a company recalibrating its ambitions. Microsoft has reportedly scaled back or postponed data center projects not just in the UK but in other regions where power availability has become a constraint.
Interest in gas connections among UK data centers has reportedly tripled as companies look for workarounds to persistent electricity grid delays. Companies that built their brands on clean energy commitments are now eyeing fossil fuel hookups because the renewable-powered grid can’t process their applications fast enough.
The infrastructure gap is widening #
Reforms are under discussion in the UK. There’s talk of prioritizing grid connections for projects deemed nationally significant, particularly those linked to AI. But the timeline for any meaningful infrastructure overhaul remains unclear.
