Microsoft, Meta, Amazon face investor anxiety over AI spending as Big Tech capex tops $700B

Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta plan to spend more than $700 billion on capital expenditures in 2026, with roughly 75% earmarked for AI infrastructure, sparking investor anxiety over returns. Alphabet's revised capex guidance of $195 billion to $205 billion triggered a sell-off, with Alphabet shares dropping 6%, Amazon and Oracle falling over 4%, Meta sliding 3%, and Microsoft declining over 2%.

Alphabet's revised capital expenditure forecast spooked markets, dragging down every major AI spender in a single session

The four largest AI spenders in tech now plan to pour more than $700 billion into capital expenditures in 2026. Investors are starting to wonder if anyone ran the numbers on a napkin first.

Alphabet kicked off the anxiety spiral on July 22 when it raised its 2026 capex guidance to a range of $195 billion to $205 billion, a $15 billion jump from its prior estimate of $180 billion to $190 billion. The company pointed to surging demand for AI infrastructure and cloud services as the reason. Wall Street’s response was swift and unforgiving.

The sell-off spread fast #

Alphabet shares dropped roughly 6% after the earnings announcement. But the damage didn’t stop there.

Amazon and Oracle each fell more than 4%. Meta slid 3%. Microsoft declined over 2%.

When you combine the capex guidance from all four major players, the total is staggering. Alphabet sits at $195 billion to $205 billion. Amazon is targeting around $200 billion. Microsoft is in the neighborhood of $190 billion. Meta has guided for $125 billion to $145 billion.

That is over $700 billion in capital spending for a single year, nearly double what these companies spent previously. Roughly 75% of that total is earmarked for AI infrastructure.

The ROI question nobody can answer yet #

Look, nobody disputes that demand for AI services is real. Alphabet’s own results proved that much. Google Cloud posted $24.8 billion in revenue for Q2, an 82% increase year-over-year.

But impressive top-line growth in cloud doesn’t automatically justify hundreds of billions in new spending. The core investor concern is about free cash flow, and whether these companies can maintain financial flexibility while simultaneously building out AI data centers. Operational margins at Alphabet are already showing signs of pressure even as revenue grows.

What this means for investors #

The immediate implication is increased volatility across Big Tech. Each quarterly earnings report from any of these four companies will now function as a referendum on whether AI spending is paying off. A single miss, or even a guidance revision like Alphabet’s, can wipe tens of billions in market cap across the sector in hours.

One metric to watch above all others is the ratio of capex to free cash flow. As long as these companies generate enough cash to fund their spending without meaningfully increasing leverage, the market will likely give them the benefit of the doubt. The moment that ratio tips, and debt starts financing what cash flow cannot, the sell-off seen on July 22 will look like a warmup.
