Micron shares drop 8% as Chinese memory chip rival CXMT captures market attention

Micron Technology shares fell 8% to around $903.50 on July 15 as Chinese memory chip rival ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) captured 8% of the global DRAM market in Q1 2026, up from 3% a year earlier, and reports emerged that Apple tested CXMT chips for China-market devices. CXMT's IPO on Shanghai's STAR Market on July 27 raised between $8.6 billion and $9.8 billion, with shares surging 466% on the first day, briefly making it China's most valuable listed company. The selloff also hit AMD and Intel, each down about 6%, and the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) fell 4%, even as Micron reported record revenue of $41.46 billion in fiscal Q3 2026, up 346% year over year.

ChangXin Memory Technologies' explosive IPO and Apple partnership rumors are rattling the entire semiconductor sector, even as AI demand keeps Micron's revenue soaring.

Micron Technology saw its stock tumble roughly 8% on July 15, trading around $903.50, as investors digested a new reality: China’s memory chip industry is no longer a punchline. It’s a competitor.

The catalyst was ChangXin Memory Technologies, better known as CXMT, which has been quietly eating into the global DRAM market while Western chip stocks were busy celebrating AI-fueled earnings.

The CXMT effect ripples across semiconductors #

Micron wasn’t the only casualty. AMD and Intel both dropped approximately 6%, while Marvell shed around 7%. The iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) dipped 4%.

CXMT captured roughly 8% of the global DRAM market in Q1 2026, up from about 3% the prior year. In English: a Chinese company nearly tripled its share of one of the most strategically important chip markets in under twelve months.

Reports that Apple has been testing CXMT-produced chips for devices sold in China added fuel to the fire.

On July 27, CXMT debuted on Shanghai’s STAR Market and raised between $8.6 billion and $9.8 billion. Its shares surged 466% on the first day of trading, briefly making it China’s most valuable listed company with a market valuation stretching between $487 billion and $540 billion.

Micron’s fundamentals tell a different story #

Micron just reported one of the best quarters in semiconductor history. Revenue hit $41.46 billion in its fiscal Q3 2026, representing a 346% increase year over year. The company’s guidance for FQ4 came in at approximately $50 billion.

Some analysts have suggested that the competitive threat from CXMT may be overstated in the near term. The selloff, in their view, looks more like profit-taking behavior after Micron’s impressive earnings run, with CXMT providing a convenient narrative justification.

Why this matters beyond chip stocks #

US chip export controls were designed to keep China a generation behind in advanced semiconductors. CXMT’s rapid market share gains in DRAM, while not at the cutting edge of high-bandwidth memory used in AI accelerators, suggest that containment strategies have limits.

If CXMT’s growing capacity leads to DRAM oversupply and price compression, that changes the economics for every company building AI infrastructure. The sheer size of CXMT’s IPO, potentially the largest in 2026, represents a massive capital injection into China’s semiconductor ambitions. Nearly $10 billion in fresh funding means more fabs, more R&D, and more aggressive pricing.

Investors watching this space should pay close attention to two things: whether Apple’s testing of CXMT chips progresses beyond China-market devices, and whether CXMT’s post-IPO capital deployment targets higher-performance memory segments.
