Artificial intelligence is about to get a government job in Maharashtra. The state has approved the deployment of Indus, the sovereign AI workspace developed by Bengaluru-based Sarvam AI, across government departments, putting the technology in the hands of around 2,500 officials.
And this isn't a small experiment tucked away in one department. The plan is to weave AI into the machinery of everyday administration: researching policies, drafting notes and replies, translating documents, summarising lengthy government schemes, analysing data and even turning scanned records into searchable text. In other words, some of the most time-consuming work behind a government file could soon have an AI assistant.
What will 2,500 officials actually use AI for? #
Think of the paperwork that keeps a government running. Officials routinely sift through previous policies and precedents, prepare correspondence, respond to citizen requests and navigate lengthy documents before arriving at decisions. Indus is designed to assist with precisely these jobs. It can prepare first drafts, conduct research, summarise documents and identify patterns or exceptions in datasets. It can also process scanned records and convert them into searchable text, potentially making older government documents easier to retrieve and use. The platform supports 22 languages, including Marathi, an important feature for an administration dealing with documents and citizens across languages.

Why does ‘sovereign AI’ matter here? #
Because government AI raises an obvious question: where does all that sensitive data go? According to Sarvam AI, Indus will operate on secure and audited infrastructure located entirely within India. Government data will remain within the country, while the state will be able to inspect the systems. That is the central idea behind sovereign AI: using artificial intelligence without surrendering control over critical data and infrastructure outside national boundaries.
Is Maharashtra only testing the technology? #
Sarvam says the deployment is across the wider state administration rather than being confined to a single-department pilot, describing it as one of the first commitments by an Indian state to deploy sovereign AI at this scale. And the 2,500 officials are only the beginning. The broader partnership is expected to eventually include AI voice agents for citizen outreach and speech technologies for public services, with more initiatives planned. For now, though, the change will begin somewhere much less glamorous but potentially far more consequential: inside the government file. Maharashtra isn't merely experimenting with AI. It is putting AI behind the desk.
