JPMorgan tests AI model that can move your money without asking you first

JPMorgan Chase is testing an AI tool called Smart Cash that can automatically move money between checking accounts and higher-yielding brokerage products without human approval. The bank has reclassified $2 billion of its AI spending as core infrastructure within a $19.9 billion technology budget for 2026. The tool represents a significant step toward autonomous AI agents managing real financial decisions.

The bank's 'Smart Cash' tool represents a quiet but significant step toward autonomous AI agents managing real financial decisions.

JPMorgan Chase is experimenting with an AI tool that can independently decide where your money should sit, moving cash between checking accounts and higher-yielding brokerage products without waiting for a human to sign off. The tool, called Smart Cash, is still in testing. But the ambition behind it is anything but small.

The concept is straightforward in theory: an AI model predicts your cash flow needs, figures out how much you actually need liquid, and shuffles the rest into products that earn better returns.

What JPMorgan is actually building #

Smart Cash first surfaced in CEO Jamie Dimon’s 2025 shareholder letter and got more airtime during the Q1 2026 earnings call. At the time, executives described it as experimental, primarily targeting wealth management clients.

Most people leave too much money sitting in checking accounts earning next to nothing. Smart Cash is designed to recognize that pattern and act on it, automatically routing funds into brokerage products with better yields while keeping enough accessible for day-to-day spending.

By June 2026, the bank’s Chief Analytics Officer Derek Waldron outlined plans to deploy AI agents capable of operating independently for hours at a stretch, with no human oversight required. That’s a meaningfully different proposition from the rule-based automation banks have used for decades.

The bank has already seen results from earlier, less autonomous AI deployments. Existing AI tools have driven a 20% increase in gross sales within private banking, according to the company’s own disclosures.

The money behind the money mover #

JPMorgan has reclassified approximately $2 billion of its AI spending as core infrastructure. That sits within a larger $19.9 billion technology budget for 2026, which means AI now accounts for roughly 10% of the bank’s total tech spend.

The wealth management division where Smart Cash is being tested is itself a massive operation. Dimon’s 2025 shareholder letter noted a 17% increase in wealth management client investment assets, reaching $1.3 trillion.

What this means for the broader landscape #

Despite JPMorgan’s parallel work on digital asset infrastructure through its Kinexys platform for tokenized deposits, there is no connection between the AI cash allocation tool and any cryptocurrency or blockchain functionality. The bank appears to be keeping its traditional banking AI initiatives and its digital asset experiments in entirely separate lanes, at least for now.
