iOS 27 adds three new iPhone features you’ll use all the time

IOS 27, launching this fall, introduces three major features: a rebuilt Siri AI that provides informed answers and performs more actions, AI-powered automatic proofreading including grammar checks, and a search overhaul in Spotlight, Photos, and Mail with a more comprehensive index. Apple says it tore Siri down and rebuilt it from the ground up, and the new proofreading underlines incorrect word usage in blue as optional suggestions.

iOS 27 launches this fall as the next major iPhone update, here are three new features that could be among the most-used for many users.

#1: Siri AI #

Whatever your opinion of Siri has been in the past, iOS 27’s Siri AI is different.

Siri didn’t just get an AI glow-up with a few upgrades. Apple says it “tore [Siri] to the ground” and “rebuilt it from the ground up.”

You can now ask Siri about anything, like you might ask Google or ChatGPT, and it provides informed, helpful answers. It can also perform way more actions on your iPhone than before, and works seamlessly and consistently across all your devices. And there’s a dedicated Siri app to hold all your conversations.

I’ve been using iOS 27’s new Siri for nearly two months, and it instantly became a daily go-to for me.

#2: Automatic proofreading, including for grammar #

The iPhone has long offered a basic spellcheck feature that underlines any words it identifies as misspelled. Now in iOS 27, Apple is expanding proofreading in two ways:

  • spellcheck is now powered by Apple Intelligence
  • there’s a new tool for checking grammar

AI being applied to spellcheck means even if a word is technically spelled correctly, you’ll see suggested word replacements if your iPhone thinks the word is being used incorrectly.

Whereas misspellings are typically underlined in red, suggested word replacements and grammar issues are underlined in blue. Compared to common typos, this makes them feel more like optional suggestions rather than in-your-face warning signs.

If you’re not a fan, you can always disable proofreading in Settings. But I’d guess that for lots of users, these features will be welcome iOS 27 additions.

#3: Search overhaul in Spotlight, Photos, and Mail #

Search is one of the most essential features for most apps, and certainly for the iPhone as a whole. And in iOS 27, Spotlight search has received a major overhaul.

In addition to having Siri fully integrated with Spotlight, the iPhone’s systemwide search has been rebuilt with a more comprehensive index of your content that always stays up to date throughout the day.

This means you should find Spotlight more useful than ever, as it offers better and more relevant results with every search. Apple says that the same new search foundation powering Spotlight has been implemented in the Photos and Mail apps too, upgrading search across those key apps. So far in my testing, I can very much tell the difference.

Which iOS 27 features have been your most-used in the beta so far? Let us know in the comments.
