OpenAI lets US Pro users text their Dots through iMessage and RCS

OpenAI announced on October 28, 2026 that US ChatGPT Pro subscribers can now message their Dots — the company's always-on AI agents powered by GPT-6 Astra — directly through iMessage and RCS, with support for text, photos and voice notes. The feature is in beta and limited to select Pro users in the US, who verify their phone number in the Dot profile inside the ChatGPT app; Dots are included with ChatGPT Pro at $100/month, with the first Dot at no extra cost on eligible plans. The change follows Dots' September 29, 2026 launch and moves direct user-to-agent communication out of the ChatGPT app into the phone's native messaging inbox.

OpenAI’s AI agents now have a phone number, or something close to one. US ChatGPT Pro users can message their Dots through iMessage or RCS, the same channels they already use to text friends, family and the group chat that never stops.

The update, announced on October 28, 2026, takes Dots out of the ChatGPT app and drops them into the default messaging inbox.

What OpenAI actually shipped #

Dots are OpenAI’s proactive, always-on AI agents. They are powered by GPT-6 Astra and are built to handle ongoing tasks while keeping a persistent memory of context.

With the new messaging support, users can send their Dot text, photos and voice notes. They can assign tasks that way and receive proactive updates in the same thread, without opening the ChatGPT app.

The feature is currently in beta. It is limited to select ChatGPT Pro users in the US, so not every Pro subscriber should expect to see it right away.

Setup runs through the Dot profile inside the ChatGPT app. Users verify their phone number there before they can start texting their agent.

Dots are included with ChatGPT Pro, which costs $100/month. The first Dot comes at no extra cost on eligible Pro plans.

A month-old product gets a new front door #

The timeline here is compressed. Dots first launched on September 29, 2026, which means messaging support arrived roughly a month after the product itself debuted.

From the start, Dots were designed to reach across more than 4,000 apps and cloud resources. That breadth was the headline at launch: an agent that could plug into a large chunk of a user’s digital life. Earlier integrations let Dots interact in some fashion with messaging platforms that were not otherwise supported, but they did not let a user message their Dot directly. Direct user-to-Dot communication is the key change.

Why the inbox is the real battleground #

iMessage covers Apple users, and RCS serves as the modern texting standard on Android, so supporting both puts Dots in front of users regardless of which phone they carry.

OpenAI’s update could potentially make the agents more accessible on wearables like the Apple Watch, where a quick text or voice note beats navigating a dedicated interface on a tiny screen.

The voice note support deserves attention on its own. Talking to an agent while walking, driving or cooking is a very different experience from typing a carefully worded prompt at a desk.

Photos open up another set of use cases. Snapping a picture of a receipt, a whiteboard or a flyer and handing it off with a one-line instruction is the kind of low-friction interaction that tends to stick.

What this means for OpenAI and its users #

For now, the rollout remains narrow: a beta, select users, US only, Pro tier only. Disclosure: This article was edited by Diego Almada Lopez. For more information on how we create and review content, see our Editorial Policy.
