More Linux kernel patches have been surfacing that confirm next-gen, high-end Nova Lake laptops will feature IPU8 image processing capabilities.
Current Intel Panther Lake laptops can use a basic UVC compliant web camera or the higher-end models leverage the Intel image processing unit (IPU) that with Panther Lake
In recent months other patches have indicated Intel Nova Lake "NVL" as featuring IPU8 and now the latest patches this week make it clear that Nova Lake will indeed bring IPU8 as the successor to Panther Lake's IPU7.5.
The patches don't lay out what are the improvements to find with the Intel IPU8 image processing IP but surely we'll be hearing about it from Intel soon enough. I have found one indication of Intel IPU8 potentially employing more "AI" features for image processing and, unfortunately, still relying on binary blobs in user-space.

features IPU 7.5. The Intel IPU since the Alder Lake days is whathad been a thorn for Linux supportdue to binary blobs in user-space and still remaining that way at least through IPU7.5 unless opting for the software ISP of libcamera. In recent months other patches have indicated Intel Nova Lake "NVL" as featuring IPU8 and now the latest patches this week make it clear that Nova Lake will indeed bring IPU8 as the successor to Panther Lake's IPU7.5.
This patch seriesprepares the Nova Lake Camera Vision Sensing / IPU8 camera support for those next-gen high-end laptops. The patches are working their way to the mainline kernel likely for the Linux v7.3 cycle. The patches don't lay out what are the improvements to find with the Intel IPU8 image processing IP but surely we'll be hearing about it from Intel soon enough.
