New research published in Nature this week shows that machine learning can improve weather forecasts two to six weeks out, a timeframe historically difficult to predict, according to a LinkedIn post by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. Nadella wrote that the work could help prepare for extreme weather, manage natural resources and inform agricultural decisions, and drew a broader lesson that the future may depend less on ever-more-capable models than on "building intelligent verification systems around them" that learn where models are systematically wrong, reason about cause and effect, and continuously calibrate predictions against reality.
