Fixing Motion Blur and Camera Shake in Photoshop #
Motion blur happens when either your subject or your camera moves while the shutter is open. Without the proper tools, trying to fix this resulted in harsh, artificial contrast lines. Today, Photoshop uses a combination of sharpening algorithms and AI to recover detail lost to camera movement.
How Photoshop tackles motion blur: Using Smart Sharpen, Photoshop analyses edge contrast and detail across the image and rebuilds sharpness along blurred edges. For the strongest recovery, Smart Sharpen’s 'Reduce Noise' and 'Remove: Lens Blur' settings target soft, out-of-focus areas without over-sharpening flat regions.
For more severe focus issues, Generative Fill (powered by Adobe Firefly) goes a step further. Instead of simply sharpening existing blurry pixels, Firefly analyses the surrounding image – environmental textures, fine line work, and patterns – and reconstructs plausible detail to replace the blurred area. How to Correct Motion Blur and Out-of-Focus Assets
1. Open your image in Adobe Photoshop.
2. Duplicate your base layer by pressing Ctrl+J (Windows) or Cmd+J (macOS) to ensure non-destructive editing.
3. Convert the duplicate layer into a Smart Object (Layer > Smart Objects > Convert to Smart Object) so you can adjust your filters non-destructively.
4. Go to Filter > Sharpen > Smart Sharpen.
5. In the Smart Sharpen dialogue, set 'Remove' to Lens Blur, then adjust the Amount and Radius sliders to recover edge detail in the blurred area.
6. Use the Reduce Noise slider to avoid amplifying grain, preview the result, then click OK. For severe blur, add a masked Generative Fill pass over the affected area to reconstruct detail.
Denoising and Sharpening Low-Light Shots in Lightroom and Camera Raw #
Anything from concert shots, night landscapes and sometimes indoor event images are all highly susceptible to luminance noise (grainy texture) and chrominance noise (discoloured red and green dots). This type of high-ISO photography needs to be handled differently when trying to correct the shot. Trying to sharpen a noisy photo usually makes things worse by sharpening the digital artifacts alongside the subject.
Using millions of raw photos as training samples, Adobe’s Denoise AI feature in Lightroom and Camera Raw can handle the complex high-ISO media. By separating digital sensor artifacts from actual photographic detail, it removes noise while preserving subtle textures like hair, fabric, and skin grain. How to Clean Up Low-Light Noise and Enhance Sharpness
1. Launch Adobe Lightroom or open your file in Adobe Camera Raw via Photoshop.
2. Navigate to the Detail panel in the right sidebar.
3. Under the Noise Reduction section, click the Denoise... button.
4. In the enhancement preview window, adjust the Amount slider (a setting between 30 and 50 offers an ideal balance between noise removal and detail preservation).
5. Click Enhance. Lightroom will create a clean, non-destructive .DNG file alongside your original photo.
6. Fine-tune the result using the Sharpening controls: hold Alt (Windows) or Option (macOS) while dragging the Masking slider to restrict sharpening strictly to high-contrast edges rather than flat background surfaces.
Upscaling Low-Resolution Images with Super Resolution #
When you stretch a small image for a large print or modern 4K display, traditional re-sizing methods fill the missing space by stretching existing pixels, creating a fuzzy, pixelated mess.
Adobe’s Super Resolution works to tackle this blur by doubling the horizontal and vertical resolution of your asset, effectively quadrupling its total pixel count. Instead of simply stretching an image, the underlying AI feature here evaluates colour, gradients, contrast boundaries, and geometric patterns to predict and draw fine visual details that weren't visible in the original file. Leaving you with a crisp, blur-free photograph.
How to Upscale Asset Resolution Without Quality Loss
1. Right-click your image inside Adobe Bridge or Photoshop and select Open in Camera Raw.
2. Right-click the image thumbnail in the filmstrip and choose Enhance. (In newer versions of Camera Raw you can also find Enhance in the Detail panel.)
3. In the Enhance dialogue box, check Super Resolution.
4. Click the preview thumbnail to toggle between the original low-res file and the upscaled render to check the edge sharpness.
5. Click Enhance. A new .dng asset will generate automatically in your working folder.
Restoring Vintage, Damaged and Faded Photographs #
Vintage photos often come with unique restoration challenges. Beside usual wear and tear on the physical print, older images are inherently soft.
Through Photoshop’s dedicated Photo Restoration Neural Filter, the tool isolates physical damage from subject details, automatically detecting and repairing scratches, grain, and colour shifts. (Note: Photo Restoration is still labelled a beta feature, and results and availability can vary by Photoshop version.)
How to Restore Historic or Damaged Prints
1. Scan your print photo and open the file in Photoshop.
2. Go to Filter > Neural Filters.
3. Locate Photo Restoration at the bottom of the Neural Filters list and toggle it on.
4. Increase Photo Enhancement to sharpen soft details and raise contrast across faded regions.
5. Adjust Scratch Reduction to remove dust, creases, and physical cracks automatically.
6. Set Output to New Layer and click OK.
