Hetzner, the German cloud provider that became a quiet institution among bootstrapped founders, has pushed through three separate price hikes in 2026, with some plans now costing more than three times what they did in April. The cause is the same AI infrastructure boom those founders are trying to build on.
The numbers are stark. On June 15, Hetzner repriced its dedicated vCPU lines, the CPX and CCX tiers, by as much as 176% for new orders. The cheapest US VPS plan that sat around $7 a month now clears $20. A team running three CCX33 instances in Germany or Finland, as Northflank's breakdown showed, went from roughly €187 to €415 a month overnight, an extra €2,736 a year that no one budgeted for.
Hetzner had already gone once in April, a 30% to 37% broad increase across all products that hit existing customers too. Then came June. Then, as webhosting.today reported, a third round that introduced a new tiering structure entirely. Grandfathered orders from before June 15 keep the old rates as long as they stay untouched, but anyone spinning up new instances faces the new reality.
Hetzner isn't blaming margin ambition. The company has pointed directly at component costs, and the data backs them up. TrendForce reported that conventional DRAM contract prices rose between 93% and 98% in a single quarter, Q1 2026, the largest quarterly increase on record. Enterprise SSD contract prices climbed roughly 80% over the same period, with enterprise SSD revenue jumping 86.1% quarter-on-quarter to $18.46 billion as supplier inventories hit historic lows. Memory and flash prices, independent analysts at Storage Switzerland noted as recently as May, are not coming down through 2027.
The driver is AI infrastructure. GPU clusters hungry for HBM and server-class DRAM have pulled memory fabs away from the commodity products that power ordinary cloud servers. Hyperscalers are winning the allocation war; budget providers absorb whatever is left, at whatever price the market has drifted to. Hetzner's hardware costs went up, and it passed them on.
The bitter irony for founders is hard to miss. The same AI boom they're building products on top of has consumed the cheap compute they were building those products with. The GPU shortage that powers ChatGPT and its successors has trickled down to the $7 VPS line.
Where does the floor land now? #
Even after three rounds of increases, Hetzner remains 2 to 3 times cheaper than DigitalOcean, Linode, or Vultr for equivalent specs, according to comparisons published by Northflank and others tracking the repricing. That fact is both reassuring and clarifying. It means the budget cloud tier hasn't disappeared; it's shifted upward. And it means the competitive reference point has changed.
The credible alternatives are a short list. OVHcloud, the French provider with more than 40 data centers, has a VPS-1 entry point at $6.46 a month with 4 vCores and 8GB RAM, putting it close to where Hetzner CX-tier pricing sat before April. Contabo, also German, still competes on raw specs per dollar for dedicated servers. Scaleway sits in the same European budget bracket. None of them are immune to the same DRAM market, and anyone betting on prices at any of these providers staying flat through 2027 is probably betting wrong.
Vultr is worth a mention for teams with latency-sensitive global workloads; its 32-region footprint is its main argument. DigitalOcean remains the choice if managed services matter more than the raw compute bill. Oracle Cloud's free tier has attracted founders willing to navigate its enterprise-flavored UX. None of these is the same answer Hetzner was six months ago.
Frankly, the more useful reframe for founders isn't which provider to switch to. It's that the era of predictable, structurally cheap cloud is under pressure in a way it hasn't been before. The AI supercycle is allocating the world's memory supply to the largest buyers first. Budget providers like Hetzner are price-takers in that environment, not price-setters. Three hikes in four months is not a policy choice; it's a signal about where the hardware market went.
For teams already running on Hetzner, the grandfathering of existing orders buys time. Don't rescale. Don't migrate those instances to new configurations. The old pricing holds until you touch it. But for anyone starting fresh, the numbers are what they are, and the alternatives, while real, don't restore the floor that made Hetzner famous in the first place.
