HD Hyundai said it is developing a barge-mounted power plant capable of supplying up to 100 megawatts of electricity as it expands into power infrastructure for AI data centers and industrial complexes.
HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, the group’s intermediate shipbuilding holding company, has received approval in principle from the American Bureau of Shipping for the floating power plant’s core technologies.
The certification covers elements of the company’s proprietary design, including its basic configuration, electrical single-line diagram and stability analysis. The facility uses HD Hyundai’s medium-sized HiMSEN engines to generate electricity offshore.
Barge-mounted power plants can be deployed near data centers and industrial complexes that face power shortages or difficulty securing land for conventional generating facilities. HD Hyundai expects demand for such solutions to grow as AI adoption and data center construction drive a sharp increase in global electricity consumption.
By generating power offshore, the facilities can reduce the land requirements and siting constraints associated with conventional power plants.
HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering plans to complete the detailed design and obtain additional certifications before formally entering the barge-mounted power plant market.
