Google Photos’ new Moods feature turns your existing images into retro film frames

Google is rolling out a new AI-powered editing feature called Moods in Google Photos, which applies retro film-style color presets to existing images with a single tap. The feature offers eight presets, including Airy Minimalist, Crisp 35mm, and 2000's Cinema, and will be available globally on both Android and iOS, with Android receiving it first, according to Shimrit Ben-Yair, VP of Google Photos.

  • Google is starting to roll out a new editing feature, called Moods, in Google Photos.
  • These presets add AI-powered color edits to your existing images, with several options for a retro vibe.
  • Moods are said to be available for users globally and across both Android and iOS soon.

Google Photos has plenty of AI-powered features, and many of them are devoted to making your photos and videos stand out through automated edits. Google is now adding another feature to this list, and it adds a classic mood to your photos with a single tap.

Back in June, we saw the first reference to a new “Moods” feature that appears on the Create tab in Google Photos. As with other features placed under the umbrella of Photos’ Create tab, Moods appears to use AI for quick color edits to your photos, including a range of filters with a retro vibe. The feature’s icon resembles an analog camera film, suggesting it leans on film-style aesthetics that now seem to be gaining popularity as part of the modern luddite movement on TikTok and other social media platforms. You can also get a digicam vibe with filters inspired by the 2000s.

Moods now appears to be rolling out to a few people, and Artem Russakovskii, founder of APKMirror, is among the lucky ones to get it first. Russakovskii recently shared screenshots of the new feature in a post on X, revealing the various editing presets available. Along with those, they also shared a screenshot suggesting you can dial down the intensity of these filters.

Similar to what we saw at the time of the preview in June, Moods offer eight presets, and the following descriptions are shared within the Photos app:

Airy Minimalist: Clean lighting and a polished, minimalist aestheticCrisp 35mm: Inspired by classic film photography with balanced contrast2000’s Cinema: Movie-inspired color grading with subtle tonal shiftsRich Textures: Enhances depth and detail for a more tactile appearancePink Digicam: A nostalgic digital-camera look with a gentle pink tintRetro Contrast: Strong shadows paired with bold color treatmentNight Lights: Soft glow effects designed for evening scenes2000’s Night: Deep nightlife colors combined with digital-style grain

In one of the replies to the post, Shimrit Ben-Yair, VP, Google Photos, also confirmed Moods would roll out globally to all users. Their post indicates that iOS users would receive the feature as well, though the Android version of the app will receive it first.

We don’t have the feature on our end yet, but we’ll ensure you’re updated once it’s available more widely.
