The question of whether AI will take away human jobs is becoming increasingly prominent as leading technology figures offer increasingly bold predictions about the future of work. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has suggested AI could influence virtually every profession and potentially enable shorter working weeks, while Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates believes humans may eventually be unnecessary for many tasks. Elon Musk has made an even more dramatic prediction, suggesting that within the next two decades, most people may no longer need to work.

Geoffrey Hinton, widely known as the “Godfather of AI,” has raised one of the strongest warnings yet about the technology’s impact on employment. Speaking during a conversation with Senator Bernie Sanders at Georgetown University, Hinton said he believes AI could cause massive unemployment, potentially leaving millions of people without work as companies increasingly turn to automation.

Why does Hinton think companies are betting on AI? #
Hinton pointed to the huge sums being invested in AI infrastructure, including data centres and chips. His argument is that companies will increasingly look to recover those investments by selling AI systems capable of performing tasks currently handled by human workers at a lower cost. He has also criticised Big Tech’s focus on commercial returns, arguing that the pursuit of profits could accelerate the replacement of employees with AI tools.
Could AI create enough new jobs to offset the losses? #
Hinton does not suggest that AI will eliminate every job or create no new employment opportunities. Instead, he believes the number of jobs generated by the technology may not be enough to compensate for those it replaces. At the same time, he has acknowledged that predicting AI’s long-term impact is extremely difficult, comparing it to driving through fog, where the near future may be visible but what lies a decade ahead remains uncertain.
How many jobs could AI actually replace? #
Sanders has also highlighted the potential scale of the disruption. A report released in October 2025, partly based on estimates generated by ChatGPT, suggested that nearly 100 million US jobs could eventually be affected by automation across sectors ranging from fast food and customer service to accounting, software development and nursing. Senator Mark Warner has separately warned that young workers and recent graduates could be particularly vulnerable, arguing that policymakers need to establish safeguards before AI-driven disruption becomes more severe.
