👻 Ghost Shell: A Haunted Terminal Powered by Local AI | Hacktoberfest 2026

A developer built Ghost Shell, an open-source "haunted terminal" that uses Google's open-weight Gemma model running locally through Ollama to respond to shell commands and exit codes with short, eerie messages, including epitaphs for deleted files and branches. The project, submitted to the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 4, runs entirely locally without an external AI API and is released under the MIT License.

What if your terminal remembered everything you deleted?

I built Ghost Shell, an AI-powered haunted terminal that brings the spirit of Halloween and Día de los Muertos into everyday development.

Powered by Google's open-weight Gemma model running locally through Ollama, Ghost Shell reacts to terminal commands with short, eerie messages.

Features:

The idea was simple: even deleted files deserve a story.

GitHub Repository: https://github.com/SYMOIZ/ghost-shell The project is open source under the MIT License. Contributions and feedback are welcome!

Ghost Shell uses an entirely local AI architecture.

Technology Stack:

The shell hook captures executed commands and their exit codes. Python communicates with the local Ollama instance to generate contextual responses.

Everything runs locally without requiring an external AI API.

Open innovation made Ghost Shell possible.

Using an open-weight model through Ollama gave me: This project demonstrates that creative AI experiences don't need expensive APIs or centralized infrastructure.

The most interesting part of this project is the digital graveyard.

Imagine deleting an old project branch and seeing your terminal respond with an epitaph.

A forgotten file becomes a memory. A deleted branch gets a final story.

Ghost Shell turns an ordinary development workflow into something a little more mysterious.

Because in this terminal, nothing is truly forgotten.

Built for Hacktoberfest 2026.
