πŸ‘» NecroOS β€” Ghost in the Machine

A developer built NecroOS, an open-source "haunted terminal" web application that uses Google's open-weight Gemma 3:4B model via Ollama to generate conversational personas for forgotten programming languages and technologies such as COBOL, Assembly and Flash. The Node.js and JavaScript app runs local inference with fallback responses when the Ollama backend is unavailable, and is published on GitHub with a live Vercel demo.

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 4: Ghost in the Machine.

NecroOS β€” Ghost in the Machine is an AI-powered haunted terminal that brings forgotten programming languages and technologies back to life through interactive conversations with digital machine spirits.

I interpreted the theme Ghost in the Machine as the idea that every technology leaves behind a digital memory. Programming languages, tools, and systems that once shaped the computing world may become outdated, but their contributions are never truly forgotten.

Inspired by the gothic cyberpunk aesthetic and the cultural tradition of DΓa de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), I created a digital experience where users can interact with the spirits of forgotten technologies.

The application features:

The central idea is simple:

What if forgotten technologies could speak again and tell their stories?

πŸ”— Live Demo: https://ghost-in-the-machine-delta.vercel.app

Explore the haunted terminal, interact with digital spirits, and experience the digital memory altar.

Note: Local AI features require Ollama and the Gemma 3:4B model to be running on the backend. If the deployed demo does not have access to a configured local AI backend, some interactions may use fallback responses.

The project is open source, and contributions, suggestions, and improvements are welcome!

I wanted to build something beyond a conventional chatbot. My goal was to create an immersive experience where open-source AI becomes part of the application's identity rather than just an additional feature.

I used Gemma 3:4B, Google's open-weight AI model, through Ollama for local inference.

The model powers:

Technology Purpose
HTML5 Application structure
CSS3 Gothic cyberpunk interface
JavaScript Frontend interactions
Node.js Backend server
Ollama Local AI inference
Gemma 3:4B AI-generated content
Web Audio API Procedural audio experience

I also implemented fallback responses so that the experience can continue when the local AI service is unavailable.

git clone https://github.com/W47K3RJO1N/ghost-in-the-machine.git

cd ghost-in-the-machine

ollama pull gemma3:4b

node server.mjs

Then open:

http://localhost:3000

Open innovation made this project possible in a way that a closed AI API alone would not.

Using an open-weight model like Gemma 3:4B gave me the freedom to experiment with AI locally, customize the interaction experience, and build an application without depending on a paid hosted inference API.

Some of the biggest advantages were:

For me, open innovation is about making technology accessible enough that developers can experiment with ideas that might otherwise remain just ideas.

I used AI-assisted development while building the application, experimenting with the architecture, interface, and local AI integration.

The most interesting part of this project was thinking about technologies that developers once depended on every day but rarely talk about anymore.

COBOL still powers important business systems. Assembly continues to represent the lowest levels of computing. Flash reminds us of an earlier, highly creative internet.

These technologies are not simply dead code. They are part of the foundation on which modern computing was built.

I wanted NecroOS to feel like entering a place where those forgotten technologies are still waiting to be heard.

The digital ofrenda represents remembrance, while the haunted terminal gives those memories a voice.

Because technology evolves, but its history deserves to live on.

NecroOS is my interpretation of Ghost in the Machine: a combination of open-weight AI, forgotten computing history, interactive storytelling, and a little bit of digital mystery.

Thank you to the Hacktoberfest community and everyone making open-source AI experimentation possible!

πŸ•―οΈ The code may be forgotten. The machine never forgets.

πŸ‘» Welcome to NecroOS.
