Gemini app simplifies thinking level picker, rolling out settings for ‘Notifications’

Google is simplifying the Gemini app's thinking level picker by removing the explicit 'Standard' option and showing only 'Extended thinking' for a one-step process, with the change rolling out widely on Android and the web. The app is also rolling out new notification settings for Daily brief, Scheduled actions, Responses, and Product updates and tips, though these are not yet widely available. Additionally, Gemini Spark on Android is switching to top tabs for task categories and replacing the menu button with a search icon.

The Gemini app is rolling out a handful of tweaks today that streamline the interface for new features.

Previously, the Gemini app’s model picker used a dropdown menu to set “Thinking level” in a two-stage process:

Standard: Best for most questions** Extended thinking**: Complex problem solving

Google is now simplifying this by no longer explicitly listing the “Standard” default and just showing “Extended thinking” for a one-step process. We’re seeing this change widely rolled out on Android and the web.

Old vs. new

Another tweak today sees Gemini Spark on Android switch to top tabs for All, Scheduled, Needs input, In progress, and Completed. The old menu button in the top-right corner is now a magnifying glass icon to “Search tasks.” This follows Google AI Pro users getting access to Spark last week.

Meanwhile, the Gemini app on Android is rolling out new settings to control “Notifications” for:

Daily brief: For a personalized look of your day** Scheduled actions**: For updates on recurring actions** Responses**: For complex questions that take time** Product updates and tips**: For features, models, and tips

This is useful if you check Daily brief by going directly to the app every morning instead of using the alert. Notifications aren’t widely rolled out yet. Once available, you’ll find them in the account menu.
