From TikTok to ‘mini apps’: How Sekai wants to transform vibe coding into a creator medium

Sekai, a platform founded in 2024 by former ByteDance executive Lucky Zhang, has seen users create over 20 million AI-generated mini-apps since its late 2025 launch, with about 250,000 new apps added daily. The company has raised $30 million in total funding, including a $20 million Series A round co-led by Khosla Ventures and Connect Ventures, and plans to release a tool in 2026 that converts social media memes or videos into interactive mini-games. Zhang believes vibe coding is becoming a creator medium, though the platform currently lacks direct monetization for creators.

Founded in 2024 by former ByteDance executive Lucky Zhang, who currently serves as the company’s chief executive officer, Sekai launched its AI mini-app product in late 2025, with users able to submit prompts to rapidly iterate on playable mini-games, quizzes, and interactive memes. So far, users have created over 20 million mini-apps using Sekai’s platform, according to Zhang in an interview with GamesBeat, who said users are adding new apps to the platform at a rate of roughly 250,000 per day. Zhang said the platform’s user base was growing due to its built-in social sharing functions, although he declined to share specific user count numbers.

“Behind it is the user’s idea, plus our creation agent, and the creation agent will try to create something that’s shareable,” Zhang said.

Sekai is betting that vibe coded apps — software created by designers describing their needs in natural language, with AI generating most of the code — are destined to become a creator medium that is commonplace across social media and daily life, much like short-form video or written content. So far, investors have bought into the vision to the tune of $30 million in total funding, including a $20 million Series A round announced in June, co-led by Khosla Ventures and Connect Ventures.

“They don’t think of this as ‘vibe coding.’ They just see this as ‘building my own game,’ or ‘building my own stuff’ — make it fun, share it with my friend,” Zhang said. “To them, it’s more like creating stuff on social media. ‘Vibe coding’ sounds very utility-driven.”

With $30 million in funding in Sekai’s war chest, Zhang has big plans to expand the company’s mini-app development platform further in 2026. In the near future, for example, Sekai plans to release a tool that allows users to automatically translate memes or videos from social media into interactive worlds or mini-games.

“We tried to make it as easy and as frictionless as possible for you to convert an inspiration into an actual creation,” Zhang said. “If you see a very fun, stupid TikTok video, just drag and drop it into Sekai, and we’ll make you a game for that.”

For now, Sekai does not have a full-fledged creator economy. Creators can build and share apps on the platform, but can’t directly monetize their creations on the platform. Zhang said his team is not currently focused on monetization, viewing it as something that will naturally follow once creators build momentum on the platform. The former ByteDance executive cited TikTok as another example of a platform that had benefited from allowing creators to build their audiences and independently monetize them through a range of revenue streams including e-commerce and livestreaming. “When the creator can actually create their own app, they can design their own ways to monetize,” Zhang said. “We think that’s going to help a lot of users build their own business model.”
