A federal judge has granted final approval to a $1.5 billion class-action copyright settlement between Anthropic and thousands of authors and publishers.
U.S. District Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín of the Northern District of California signed off on the agreement Monday, calling it “meaningful relief” for the affected rights holders. The deal marks the largest known copyright recovery in U.S. history and serves as the first major U.S. copyright lawsuit against a generative artificial intelligence (AI) company to reach a final settlement.
Under terms of the agreement, Anthropic will pay approximately $3,000 per book to copyright owners whose works were used without permission to build its flagship chatbot, Claude. The settlement covers roughly 500,000 works. According to court filings, rights holders representing more than 91% of the 482,000 identified books have already claimed their payouts.
“We look forward to making distributions to the Class as promptly as possible,” lead plaintiff attorney Justin Nelson said in a statement celebrating the record-breaking payout.
The legal battle originated in 2024 when bestselling thriller novelist Andrea Bartz and two co-plaintiffs sued the Amazon.com Inc.- and Alphabet-backed tech company. The suit alleged that Anthropic fed pirated copies of their books into its large language models.

The trajectory of the litigation shifted dramatically under former U.S. District Judge William Alsup, who issued a pivotal, mixed ruling prior to his retirement.
Alsup determined that while training AI models on copyrighted text constitutes legally protected fair use, a decision hailed as a major win for the tech sector, Anthropic crossed legal boundaries by acquiring millions of books from illicit shadow libraries such as Library Genesis and Pirate Library Mirror to build a centralized library.
Facing a trial over the piracy claims and the prospect of billions in potential statutory damages, Anthropic elected to settle. Because the case was resolved out of court, Judge Alsup’s ruling regarding fair use will not be reviewed by an appellate court, leaving its broader legal precedent unconfirmed across the wider industry.
Judge Martínez-Olguín dismissed pushback from critical authors who argued the $3,000-per-book payout was inadequate, noting that objections were “not grounded in a realistic assessment of the overall risks and rewards of a trial.” Court records show the judge also awarded plaintiffs’ attorneys over $101 million in legal fees.
Despite the monumental settlement, the legal debate over AI training data remains far from over. Several authors and publishers opted out of the settlement to pursue independent claims against Anthropic. Meanwhile, high-stakes copyright lawsuits against tech giants like Google, Meta Platforms Inc., Midjourney, and OpenAI continue to wind their way through federal courts, ensuring that the boundaries between intellectual property rights and AI development remain fiercely contested.
